While the cameras track his car around every corner, the variables costing him lap time aren’t always coming from the cockpit.

Speaking with astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson at the Miami Grand Prix as part of a science and sport feature on StarTalk, the seven-time world champion laid out exactly how difficult the 2026 regulations have made the job of a racing driver – and who takes the blame when things go wrong.

“The software has to work right,” Hamilton told Tyson. “And that’s the biggest problem. Like yesterday, I was losing three-tenths of a second just because the software wasn’t doing its job. I didn’t know till I came back out to my engineers, I’m like, ‘I’m sorry. I’m slow.’ And they’re like, ‘You’re not slow. The software wasn’t working.’”

Tyson’s reply cut to the heart of it: no one watching at home connects a slow lap to an energy deployment algorithm. The audience sees the driver. Hamilton’s response was simply: “Exactly.”

Why the 2026 Rules Make This Problem So Much Worse

The 2026 regulations have redrawn the relationship between driver input and car output more dramatically than any ruleset in recent memory. The power unit now targets a near 50/50 split between the combustion engine and electrical energy – up from an 80/20 ratio that governed the sport from 2014 through 2025. The MGU-K now deploys up to 350kW of electrical power, nearly three times the previous 120kW ceiling. The catch is that the battery storing all that energy is capped at just 4 megajoules at any given moment, meaning it can be drained far more rapidly than before.

Gone too is the MGU-H, the system that used to recover energy from exhaust gases at high speed. With that component removed from the architecture, teams now depend almost entirely on braking to put charge back into the battery. On circuits with long straights and limited heavy braking zones, that equation becomes punishing – and Ferrari has been caught out by it repeatedly.

When a car runs low on stored electrical energy during a straight, the power unit begins “super clipping”: diverting combustion engine output toward recharging the battery rather than driving the wheels, even with the throttle pinned. Data gathered from Miami race telemetry revealed that Ferrari’s hybrid unit was shutting off battery deployment approximately 200 meters short of the straight’s end, whereas competitors including Mercedes maintained full electrical output through to the finish of those same sections, according to Sunday Guardian Live.

Hamilton had already flagged the problem clearly after the Miami Sprint, calling on Ferrari to address it before qualifying: “I think they’re gonna have to do some software changes or something to make sure that doesn’t happen going into qualifying… Hopefully we have slightly better deployment and yeah the set up is in the wrong place, definitely will make some big changes going into qualifying.”

It isn’t purely a Ferrari problem. Hamilton acknowledged as much: “It’s really hard for fans to fully understand it, and it’s hard for us to understand it because the ultimate goal when you’re driving a Formula 1 car is to push the car to the limit.” The paradox of 2026 is that pushing harder through a high-speed corner – the kind of committed driving fans come to watch – can actively hurt a driver’s position by leaving the battery undercharged for the straight that follows. As Hamilton said: “If you take the high speed fast, if you got more committed and you take more risk and you go faster through a corner, you get penalized afterwards because you don’t charge enough.”

Former Ferrari driver Marc Gené, now heading the Ferrari Driver Academy, explained the structural tension at play:

“The software says for every car what is the optimum way of deploying the energy. But on race day… the driver decides how to… where to attack, where not to attack.” In theory, that gives drivers agency. In practice, when the software misbehaves, the driver is the one left apologizing to their engineers.

Hamilton is currently third in the drivers’ championship with 147 points, chasing the Mercedes duo of George Russell (154) and championship leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli (179). He took his first win of the 2026 season at Barcelona in June. But the invisible tax of software instability – on top of the inherent complexity of managing energy across 50-plus laps – is a variable no amount of driver skill can fully override. And when it costs three-tenths in a single session, the gap between where Hamilton should be and where the timing sheet says he is gets harder to explain to anyone watching from the outside.

That’s not a criticism of the regulations. Formula 1 has always been a sport where engineering and driving ability intertwine, and the 2026 rules represent a genuine attempt to make racing more unpredictable and overtaking more frequent. But Hamilton’s point deserves to land: when the car loses time because of a deployment bug, the driver is the one who has to live with the headline.

Lewis Hamilton has spent the better part of 2026 fighting a battle most viewers cannot see.
