{"id":795823,"date":"2026-07-11T21:50:22","date_gmt":"2026-07-11T21:50:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/795823\/"},"modified":"2026-07-11T21:50:22","modified_gmt":"2026-07-11T21:50:22","slug":"the-u-s-just-approved-a-giant-space-mirror-to-test-sunlight-on-demand-low-earth-orbit-is-getting-weird","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/795823\/","title":{"rendered":"The U.S. just approved a giant space mirror to test \u2018sunlight on demand.\u2019 Low Earth orbit is getting weird"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A giant mirror to create \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencefocus.com\/qanda\/sunlight-on-demand\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sunlight on demand<\/a>\u201d was <a href=\"https:\/\/ca.pcmag.com\/networking\/16760\/fcc-approves-reflect-orbitals-giant-mirror-satellite-that-astronomers-hate\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">just approved by the United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC)<\/a>, despite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/science\/reflect-orbital-space-mirror-9.6947427\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">opposition from astronomers<\/a> and the public, and <a href=\"https:\/\/ui.adsabs.harvard.edu\/link_gateway\/2000JRASC..94..237L\/ADS_PDF\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">real safety concerns<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>The FCC approved the company Reflect Orbital to test one satellite, named Earendil-1, as a means of reflecting the sun\u2019s rays back to Earth for extra solar energy and wide-area lighting. The light is expected to cover an area about five kilometres wide, and will require <a href=\"https:\/\/nasaspacenews.com\/2025\/10\/4000-orbital-mirrors-could-catastrophically-brighten-night-sky-astronomers-warn\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">repointing every four minutes<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>And this is just the start. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reflectorbital.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Reflect Orbital plans to have more than 50,000 satellites in action by 2035<\/a>, which they claim will be used across agricultural, emergency response and other industrial sectors.<\/p>\n<p>There are <a href=\"https:\/\/bigthink.com\/starts-with-a-bang\/true-cost-solar-power-night-reflect-orbital\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">many problems with this proposal<\/a>, including impacts these satellites will have on human health and safety, as well as on astronomy and the low-Earth environment. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.darkskyconsulting.com\/blog\/the-dangers-of-sunlight-as-a-service\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Flashes during mirror repointing<\/a> could disrupt pilots and drivers. The light could also disrupt circadian rhythms of plants, animals and <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1080\/07420528.2018.1527773\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">humans<\/a>. Sensitive detectors in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/satellite-streaks-can-the-huge-new-vera-rubin-observatory-function-in-the-megaconstellation-age\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">research telescopes<\/a>, as well as star-tracking cameras on lower altitude satellites, could be overloaded and fried.<\/p>\n<p>The FCC said that the \u201crisks of harm raised on the record regarding Reflect Orbital\u2019s solar reflector are <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.fcc.gov\/public\/attachments\/DA-26-706A1.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">unrelated to the Commission\u2019s role in authorizing use of radiofrequency spectrum.<\/a>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>            <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A black screen with The Sunlight Company written in white and red text.\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/file-20260710-57-siv6c1.png\" class=\"native-lazy\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>              Reflect orbital brands itself as, \u2018the sunlight company.\u2019<br \/>\n              (Reflect Orbital)<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Weird space stuff\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Satellite proposals for \u201cemergent space activities\u201d in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/ESA_Multimedia\/Images\/2020\/03\/Low_Earth_orbit\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">low-Earth orbit<\/a> are becoming increasingly outlandish. The proposals have become so weird, in fact, that the FCC recently published a document called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fcc.gov\/document\/spectrum-abundance-weird-space-stuff\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Spectrum Abundance for Weird Space Stuff<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce the province of science fiction,\u201d this document states, \u201cAmerican companies are now upgrading, relocating and servicing satellites; manufacturing pharmaceuticals in space; building private inhabitable spacecraft; and conducting private robotic missions to the surface of the Moon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Millions of orbital <a href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/technology\/artificial-intelligence\/putting-the-servers-in-orbit-is-a-stupid-idea-could-data-centers-in-space-help-avoid-an-ai-energy-crisis-experts-are-torn\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AI data centres<\/a> are also planned. Corporations seem to be scrambling to launch anything that might persuade investors throw money at them: space <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/space-advertising-draws-astronomers-opposition\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">advertising<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/theweek.com\/science\/space-hotels-tourism-moon\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hotels for billionaires<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/interestingengineering.com\/innovation\/sky-canvas-artificial-meteor-earth-demand\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">artificial meteor showers<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.celestis.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">space burials for cremated remains<\/a>, solar-powered <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2026\/04\/27\/meta-inks-deal-for-solar-power-at-night-beamed-from-space\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">infrared beams to power data centres<\/a> and a variety of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lockheedmartin.com\/en-us\/capabilities\/missile-defense\/golden-dome-missile-defense.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">orbital missiles<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The phrase \u201cweird space stuff\u201d is refreshingly truthful. So, how did we get here?<\/p>\n<p>SpaceX controls orbit<\/p>\n<p>There are close to <a href=\"https:\/\/planet4589.org\/space\/con\/star\/log.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">11,000 SpaceX Starlink satellites<\/a> currently in orbit above our heads. Anyone who wants to launch into low-Earth orbit needs to carefully consider SpaceX operations, or directly co-ordinate with them. <\/p>\n<p>Otherwise they risk collisions, like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/satellites\/spacecraft-from-chinese-launch-nearly-slammed-into-starlink-satellite-spacex-says\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">near-miss between a Starlink and Chinese satellite in December 2025<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>      Read more:<br \/>\n      <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/a-new-crash-clock-measures-the-chance-of-satellite-collisions-and-its-ticking-down-fast-283481\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">A new CRASH Clock measures the chance of satellite collisions, and it\u2019s ticking down fast<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Even the Artemis I launch in 2022 and Artemis II launch in 2026 had small <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=CMLD0Lp0JBg&amp;t=10780s\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201ccutout\u201d windows in their launch timing<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/conference.sdo.esoc.esa.int\/proceedings\/sdc9\/paper\/260\/SDC9-paper260.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">to avoid satellites<\/a>, including those belonging to Starlink. <\/p>\n<p>Co-ordination is good. Forcing it because one corporation has effectively occupied low-Earth orbit is not. Indeed, the 1967 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unoosa.org\/oosa\/en\/ourwork\/spacelaw\/treaties\/introouterspacetreaty.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Outer Space Treaty<\/a>, which was signed by more than 100 countries including the United States, China and Russia, states that, \u201couter space is not subject to national appropriation by claim of sovereignty, by means of use or occupation.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Whether SpaceX\u2019s extensive use of Earth orbits <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unoosa.org\/documents\/pdf\/copuos\/2026\/Statements\/UPDATES\/Item_5_G-77_and_China_Statement_COPUOS_69th_2026.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">violates this principle<\/a> is now being tested in real time. <\/p>\n<p>Copycat megaconstellations<\/p>\n<p>In February, SpaceX <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.fcc.gov\/public\/attachments\/DA-26-113A1.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">filed with the FCC for one million more satellites<\/a>, for \u201cAI data centers.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>One million. That is 40 times as many satellites <a href=\"https:\/\/planet4589.org\/space\/stats\/pay.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">as have ever been launched<\/a> \u2014 for a single megaconstellation consisting of <a href=\"https:\/\/taranis.ie\/datacenters-in-space-are-a-terrible-horrible-no-good-idea\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">completely untested technology that may not even work in space<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>            <a role=\"button\" aria-label=\"Zoomable image\" aria-haspopup=\"dialog\" href=\"https:\/\/images.theconversation.com\/files\/747069\/original\/file-20260710-85-tu3oog.jpg?ixlib=rb-4.1.0&amp;q=45&amp;auto=format&amp;w=1000&amp;fit=clip\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A rocket takes off against a dark sky.\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/file-20260710-85-tu3oog.jpg\" class=\"native-lazy\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>              A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket with a payload of Starlink internet satellites lifts off from the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Cape Canaveral, Fla., in 2023.<br \/>\n              (AP Photo\/John Raoux)<\/p>\n<p>Not only did the <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.fcc.gov\/public\/attachments\/DA-26-113A1.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">FCC accept SpaceX\u2019s filing<\/a>, but they did so at ludicrous speed. Scientists worldwide then had just 30 days to <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/a-million-new-spacex-satellites-will-destroy-the-night-sky-for-everyone-on-earth-277938\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">model the effects<\/a> with woefully incomplete information on masses, sizes, compositions and orbital distributions.  <\/p>\n<p>At the time of writing, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geekwire.com\/2026\/blue-origin-data-center-space-race-project-sunrise\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">four other<\/a> copycat <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcmag.com\/news\/data-center-space-race-heats-up-as-starcloud-startup-requests-88000-satellites\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AI data centre<\/a> proposals <a href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/technology\/cowboy-space-raises-usd275-million-to-launch-ai-data-centers-on-brand-new-rocket\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">have been filed<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/spacenews.com\/orbital-files-plans-for-100000-orbital-data-centers\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rival companies<\/a>, for tens of thousands of satellites each. And <a href=\"https:\/\/ca.pcmag.com\/networking\/16713\/starlink-gen-3-to-span-100k-satellites-for-gigabit-broadband-but-also-ai\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SpaceX just proposed<\/a> another 100,000 satellites to interface with the million AI data centres that it already asked for. <\/p>\n<p>Solar energy from space<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Federal Communications Commission was originally set up to regulate radio broadcasts. But it is now being asked to evaluate many non-radio effects, including orbital safety, which it may not have the required expertise for. It would make sense to move some of this evaluation to the <a href=\"https:\/\/space.commerce.gov\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. Office of Space Commerce<\/a>. However, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/office-of-space-commerce-faces-an-uncertain-future-amid-budget-cuts-and-new-oversight\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">recent budget cuts<\/a> make that infeasible. <\/p>\n<p>Consequently, the FCC will soon be asked to judge a daunting range of satellite proposals. They include a cluster of proposals to <a href=\"https:\/\/harvardtechnologyreview.com\/2025\/09\/05\/the-future-of-energy-unlocking-the-potential-of-space-based-solar-power\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">gather solar energy from space<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>One idea is to send solar power down to earth through high energy beams. These could change atmospheric chemistry and kill birds and other wildlife that stray into the beam. <\/p>\n<p>They would also require no-fly zones around receiving stations for airplanes and also satellites on lower altitude orbits (such as the orbits SpaceX just requested for 100,000 more Starlink satellites).<\/p>\n<p>Environmental costs<\/p>\n<p>While many of these projects claim to solve environmental problems by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reflectorbital.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">creating clean energy<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spacex.com\/spacexai\/starmind\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">capturing it in space<\/a>, they function as a form of greenwashing. <\/p>\n<p>The solar energy generated is only clean if you ignore the environmental costs of building, launching, maintaining and burning satellites up in Earth\u2019s atmosphere. The daily operations of all these proposed systems will have huge environmental consequences.<\/p>\n<p>            <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Rows of solar panels on green fields.\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/file-20260710-57-11bmyb.jpg\" class=\"native-lazy\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>              The goal of many \u2018weird\u2019 space projects is beaming the sun to Earth at night to power solar farms.<br \/>\n              (Unsplash\/Andreas Gucklhorn)<\/p>\n<p>There are companies that have tested <a href=\"https:\/\/www.astroscale.com\/en\/solutions\/remove\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">plans for removing space debris from orbit<\/a>. This is helpful for <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/too-many-satellites-earths-orbit-is-on-track-for-a-catastrophe-but-we-can-stop-it-275430\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">avoiding Kessler Syndrome<\/a> \u2014 a runaway chain reaction of collisions. But where will the debris go once removed from orbit?  <\/p>\n<p>It will fall into Earth\u2019s atmosphere, where it will deposit metal and possibly impact Earth\u2019s surface. It is unclear who is <a href=\"https:\/\/scholarlypublications.universiteitleiden.nl\/access\/item%3A4082467\/view\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">responsible for any resulting damage or deaths<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For all humankind<\/p>\n<p>The majority of satellites in orbit today are American, and the main federal agency regulating satellites is not set up to do that well. We are now seeing the consequences.<\/p>\n<p>While outer space is effectively infinite, low-Earth orbit most definitely is not. Satellites orbit the Earth around once every 90 minutes. This means <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/a-new-crash-clock-measures-the-chance-of-satellite-collisions-and-its-ticking-down-fast-283481\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the collision potential between two objects in orbit is large<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>The many satellites and rocket bodies that have burned up in Earth\u2019s atmosphere over the last few years have <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/space-launches-are-changing-the-chemistry-of-earths-atmosphere-studies-warn-heres-what-can-be-done-277264\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">already measurably altered it<\/a>. Preliminary studies show that using Earth\u2019s atmosphere as a <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/a-new-space-race-could-turn-our-atmosphere-into-a-crematorium-for-satellites-276366\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">crematorium for tens of thousands of satellites<\/a> will have devastating effects on ozone and other atmospheric chemistry.<\/p>\n<p>Astronomy is also under threat from some of the \u201cweirder\u201d ideas like <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/a-us-startup-plans-to-deliver-sunlight-on-demand-after-dark-can-it-work-and-would-we-want-it-to-264323\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">space mirrors<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/general\/like-a-diamond-in-the-sky-how-to-spot-nasas-solar-sail-demo-in-orbit\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">solar sails<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1093\/mnrasl\/slab030\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">diffuse sky brightening<\/a> from orbital debris.<\/p>\n<p>An innovation challenge<\/p>\n<p>We are not here to argue against satellites. Indeed, they provide a wide range of beneficial services to science and society. But each satellite comes with a cost that must be taken into account. <\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, this is an innovation challenge.
