Mikel Arteta has called on Viktor Gyokeres\u2019 teammates to give him more support after the striker\u2019s competitive debut away to Manchester United.\"MANCHESTER,Photo by Michael Regan\/Getty Images<\/p>\n

Viktor Gyokeres<\/a> made his first competitive appearance for Arsenal against Manchester United on Sunday, but he\u2019ll likely have mixed feelings about how the game went.<\/p>\n

On the one hand, Arsenal won 1-0, taking all three points from a difficult opening game away from home. On the other, he didn\u2019t score and wasn\u2019t even able to get a shot off.<\/p>\n

Reflecting on his new striker\u2019s performance, Mikel Arteta<\/a> suggested Gyokeres did a lot of good work and needs more help from his teammates.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe did a lot of things very good,\u201d Arteta said<\/a>. \u201cYou can tell, especially in our high pressing,\u00a0the rhythm that we demand, especially in the first half,\u00a0we\u2019re giving a bit too much time.\u00a0It\u2019s something that we have to work on, especially there.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd then in the finalising situation,\u00a0he didn\u2019t have that many chances to do that because, as I said,\u00a0on the previous action before, we had to play that last ball\u00a0[when] the line was standing still with 40 metres behind. We didn\u2019t manage to put the ball through to exploit his quality.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut overall, coming away to Manchester United,\u00a0winning your first game with Arsenal, it\u2019s a good start.\u201d<\/p>\n

Arteta went on to suggest there were plenty of opportunities for Arsenal to get the ball in behind, they just failed to do so in the majority of cases.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think there were seven, eight situations\u00a0when the ball is completely open to play through and we are on\u00a0and we\u2019re attacking the keeper,\u201d Arteta said. \u201cAnd we give that ball away and then it becomes a basketball game.\u201d<\/p>\n

With time, the hope is that Arsenal will become more accustomed to the current adaptations in the team\u2019s playing style. If they can find Gyokeres in behind more consistently, the Swedish striker\u2019s track record suggests he\u2019s capable of taking advantage.<\/p>\n
