"PittsburghPenguins GM Kyle Dubas says teams are calling to get their picks back. Is a major offer sheet for a star RFA like Mason McTavish or Luke Hughes brewing?

The NHL offseason may seem quiet on the surface, but beneath the calm waters, a storm is brewing, and it appears the eye of that storm is hovering directly over Pittsburgh. When Penguins GM Kyle Dubas casually mentioned on the “Cam & Strick” podcast that teams were calling to buy back their 2026 draft picks, he wasn’t just making small talk. He was sending a message to the rest of the league: the Penguins are in a position of power, and they know it.

Unpacking the Motives Behind the Pittsburgh Penguins Rumors

Why the sudden interest from teams like the St. Louis Blues, Winnipeg Jets, and San Jose Sharks in reclaiming their own draft capital? On one hand, the 2026 NHL Draft is shaping up to be exceptionally deep. Any prudent GM would want as many lottery tickets as possible for a chance at a franchise-altering talent. However, Dubas’s coy remark, “And you know why,” suggests something more immediate is at play.

The real leverage here isn’t just about 2026; it’s about the present. To extend an offer sheet to a restricted free agent, a team must have its own original draft picks for the corresponding compensation level. This is where it gets interesting.

High-profile RFAs like Mason McTavish (Anaheim), Luke Hughes (New Jersey), and Marco Rossi (Minnesota) remain unsigned. Could the Blues or Jets be gearing up for a bold offer sheet to acquire a player like McTavish? To do so, they’d need their picks back from Pittsburgh. This transforms the Penguins’ draft assets from simple future investments into critical keys that could unlock a major, immediate roster upgrade for another franchise. Dubas isn’t just fielding calls; he’s controlling the gateway to some of the biggest potential moves of the offseason.

What’s Next for the Penguins?

The price to reacquire these picks won’t be cheap. Dubas holds all the cards and can extract a significant “convenience fee” to facilitate another team’s blockbuster move. For Penguins fans, this is a fascinating development. Will Dubas leverage this power to add more immediate help for the current roster, or will he stand firm and stockpile assets for the future? It’s a classic GM dilemma that adds another layer of intrigue to the ongoing Pittsburgh Penguins Rumors.
