The Montreal Canadiens are not just targeting Anthony Mantha, they reportedly appear ready to make a move.

However, the offer being considered comes with a clear limitation.

According to Marc-Olivier Beaudoin, the club would be willing to present only a very short-term deal, nothing more.

Kent Hughes would therefore be prepared to offer Anthony Mantha an attractive contract, but only a very short-term one.

The forward, however, is looking for something different.

Mantha is seeking a medium- or long-term commitment, creating a significant gap between the two sides.

It’s easy to understand why Montreal remains interested despite that.

At 31 years old, Mantha is coming off a season in which he scored 33 goals and recorded 64 points in 81 games, along with a +10 rating.

The Canadiens are familiar with this type of negotiation.

They previously offered Jonathan Marchessault a short-term contract that came with a generous average annual salary.

It didn’t work then. Will the outcome be the same with Mantha?

A Jonathan Marchessault-style short-term gamble to convince Anthony Mantha

Beaudoin was clear about what the Canadiens are prepared to offer.

“However, the idea would be a willingness to partner on a very short-term basis, while Mantha is looking for a medium- or long-term contract.”

The report was also shared here:

One season, potentially at a premium salary, to add a productive veteran without committing long term. That’s our interpretation of the situation for the Montreal Canadiens.

Everything will depend on Mantha’s willingness to compromise. If he refuses to budge on contract length, the Canadiens’ offer will apparently go unanswered.
