Before his nation\u2019s World Cup quarter-final \u2060against Norway on Saturday, the England captain Harry Kane<\/a> confirmed that he played golf \u2060with Donald Trump<\/a>, describing the experience as \u201csurreal\u201d and praising the US president\u2019s game.<\/p>\n

Trump surprised reporters on 6 July by saying that he had previously played golf with Kane, calling the England<\/a> striker a great \u2060player and a good golfer.<\/p>\n

Asked by a reporter about Trump\u2019s comments, and how he played, Kane confirmed the round took place in Palm \u200bBeach, Florida, about 18 \u200cmonths earlier.<\/p>\n

\u201cI played \u200call right, to be honest,\u201d Kane said. \u201cYeah, we played about 18 months ago. He invited me to play when I was down in Palm Beach, so yeah, when the president invites you somewhere \u2026 it was a pretty surreal experience just to meet him and obviously play golf with him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kane\u2019s club side, Germany\u2019s Bayern Munich, was on a winter break from late December 2024 to early January 2025, suggesting that the round took place before the start of Trump\u2019s second presidency.<\/p>\n

Kane, who once told the German site golfpunk.de<\/a> that he plays to a 3 handicap, went on to praise the 80-year-old Trump\u2019s golf game. \u201cHis \u200cgolf\u2019s pretty good, to be honest with you,\u201d the England striker said. \u201cI hope I can play golf as good as \u200bhim when I\u2019m his age, that\u2019s for sure.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo yeah, unique experience but yeah, I was just grateful he invited me down to play.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump had complimented the Bayern Munich forward on social media following England\u2019s 3-2 round-of-16 victory over \u200bMexico on 5 July, writing: \u201cHarry Kane \u200bof England is a \u200bGREAT player!!!\u201d The following day, Trump revealed the \u200bpair had \u200cgolfed together.<\/p>\n

\u201cI \u200bthink Kane \u200bis a great player,\u201d Trump said. \u201cI played golf with him and I like him a lot. He\u2019s a good golfer. He\u2019s really great.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kane\u2019s confirmation that he golfed with Trump sparked a backlash on social media from critics of the president.<\/p>\n

\u201cBleak, bleak. You don\u2019t just pal around with someone like that,\u201d the writer Musa Okwonga commented<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Jules Boykoff, a political scientist whose latest book is Red Card: The 2026 World Cup, Sportswashing, and the Fifa Greed Machine, joked<\/a> that Kane might have been tempting fate by associating with the president, who attended the only game of the NBA finals that the New York Knicks lost before they went on to win the league championship in June for the first time since 1973.<\/p>\n

England hope to finally end 60 years of hurt since winning its first and so far only World Cup<\/a> in 1966.<\/p>\n

\u201cHarry Kane just begging for the Trump Curse to come a-knocking,\u201d Boykoff wrote.<\/p>\n

Other US football fans suggested<\/a> that rival strikers, including Kylian Mbapp\u00e9, who has publicly criticized the French far right, and Norway\u2019s Erling Haaland would have spurned the invitation to play with Trump.<\/p>\n

\u201cGuess Harry Kane has no issues with being a dumb sports washing tool for authoritarianism,\u201d Murshed Zaheed, a former aide to the late Democratic senator Harry Reid, wrote<\/a>. \u201cScrew this guy. He certainly is no Mbappe.
