A bittersweet memorial to an Edmonton cyclist was established Thursday with the installation of a ghost bike in Mill Woods.<\/p>\n
It was installed on the west side of the intersection at 34 Street and 28A Avenue in memory of Alfred Reisdorf, a cyclist killed in a vehicle collision on Nov. 23, 2025, Bike Edmonton announced in a Friday news release.<\/p>\n
“He was my whole life and now I am all alone,” said Zenat Damani, Reisdorf’s widow. “I wake up every morning and just think that maybe I will hear him.”<\/p>\n
Reisdorf was crossing 34 Street at 28A Avenue on his bike when he was struck by a Hyundai Tucson operated by a 41-year-old man. Reisdorf died in hospital later that day.<\/p>\n
The driver of the Tucson has been charged with careless driving.<\/p>\n
A ghost bike is an all-white bicycle that is placed at sites where a cyclist was killed, “as reminders of the tragedy that took place.” The bike was created by Bike Edmonton Community Workshop, a grassroots organization that advocates for cyclist accessibility across Edmonton.<\/p>\n
Members of Reisdorf’s family and Bike Edmonton representatives rode bikes at 11 a.m. along 34 Street, from the Mill Woods LRT station to the scene of the collision, carrying the ghost bike to its resting place.<\/p>\n
“We send our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Alfred Reisdorf, who continue to mourn his untimely death in this tragic collision,” said Coreen Shewfelt, community workshop co-director at Bike Edmonton, in the news release. “Everyone deserves to make it to their destination safely, no matter what form of transportation they use.”<\/p>\n
Friendly neighbourhood cyclist<\/p>\n
Damani says Reisdorf was of German background and moved to Edmonton from Argentina at the age of 14. She describes him as a “very kind, compassionate man” who not only took care of Damani but also looked after her mother and her brother who suffers from a mental illness.<\/p>\n
“He was helpful to anybody. He would talk to strangers and help them,” Damani said. “My neighbors called him man in a white shirt because he was watering their plants when they were not home. That’s his nature.”<\/p>\n
Damani says her late husband was very passionate about cycling, and thinks the installation of the ghost bike is “wonderful” and a “blessing” that might save someone’s life.<\/p>\n
“This will at least make it a little bit safer and deter people from speeding,” Damani said. “I live a block away from here and I can hear people speeding. This neighborhood has grown a lot and when people are coming out, taking a left or right turn, they will see this.”<\/p>\n
Building better paths<\/p>\n
The practice of ghost bike memorials was started in St. Louis, Mo., in 2004. Bike Edmonton says the memorial for Reisdorf is the 21st they’ve installed throughout Edmonton since 2007.<\/p>\n
“Recent improvements to cycling infrastructure in Edmonton have increased the number of safe mobility options for everyone,” Shewfelt said in the release. “However, roads like 34 Street are built to prioritize the speed and comfort of drivers over the safety of other road users.”<\/p>\n
Edmonton saw 32 cyclist deaths in 2025, the deadliest year in more than a decade. So far in 2026, Edmonton has seen 11 traffic fatalities.<\/p>\n
“We are frustrated that the provincial government has removed enforcement tools, such as red light cameras, that would improve the safety of people travelling by foot and bike at this intersection, especially as it’s the only place to cross 34th Street between 34th Avenue and 23rd Avenue. Similar roads throughout suburban Edmonton put active transportation users at risk whenever they wish to leave their neighbourhoods.”<\/p>\n
