Tom Garry<\/p>\nThe Spain defender Mapi Le\u00f3n has joined London City Lionesses on a three-year deal after completing a free transfer from Barcelona, joining her team-mate Alexia Putellas in moving to the Women\u2019s Super League club.<\/p>\n
The Guardian reported on 2 June that Le\u00f3n was poised to move to the big-spending English team, who have also added the former England goalkeeper Mary Earps to their squad this summer.<\/p>\n
Le\u00f3n, 31, told the club\u2019s website: \u201cI played in Spain for many years and I felt now was the right time to move given the project. The English league is helping women\u2019s football grow. I wanted to test myself in another country, another league, playing a different type of football.\u201d<\/p>\n

The optimal number for a sensibly functioning tournament is 32, but that isn\u2019t enough, I don\u2019t think \u2013 the break-up of communist Europe is one reason, but also, our Euro-centric focus has changed and we need more countries from everywhere else too.<\/p>\n As far as beating France goes, I think Spain have the best chance, especially with Rodri looking more like his pre-injury self, but they need more from Lamine Yamal, who still doesn\u2019t look fully fit.<\/p>\n England have the players to out-run France in midfield, but I think their defence would eventually let them down, while I don\u2019t think Argentina have much hope because they don\u2019t have enough in that part of the pitch.<\/p>\n Share<\/a><\/p>\n Updated at\u00a004.23 EDT<\/p>\n I\u2019m pretty sure this one will blow over. No one has done more to disprove the truism that football is a team game.<\/p>\n Share<\/a>Share<\/a><\/p>\n Back to the pub piece, it\u2019s great that businesses are getting a boost. Steve Hopkins, owner of the Shovel Inn in Stourbridge, where Bellingham was born, is quitting the business after the tournament.<\/p>\n He said: \u201cI\u2019ve been in pubs for six World Cups. Most have been fantastic for trade but for this one turnout has been poor. People are staying away from boozers or only coming to them at the last minute. You\u2019re talking about doubling your trade while the World Cup was on.<\/p>\n \u201cEver since Covid, people have been staying at home, it\u2019s a different way of life now. I\u2019ve run pubs since I was 18, and I\u2019m now 64, and I\u2019m glad I\u2019m getting out.<\/p>\n \u201cThis is a semi-final and for once it\u2019s on at good time of the night for it. People usually want the atmosphere at the pub to share the experience, because you can\u2019t get that at home. If I don\u2019t get a really good turnout that would just sum it up.\u201d<\/p>\n For the Shovel Inn, a good night\u2019s takings would be about \u00a33,000. Hopkins said: \u201cIf I get a grand on Wednesday I\u2019ll be doing well.\u201d<\/p>\n Share<\/a><\/p>\n Email! \u201cWhile not a fan of Fifa\u2019s blatant attempts to change the World Cup<\/a> solely to make more money,\u201d writes Ryan, \u201cI\u2019m actually not against the idea of going to 64 teams. The quality difference between no 48 and no 64 in the world rankings is not that large on paper, so I don\u2019t see that it would significantly dilute the quality of the tournament. It also presents an advantage that we can move back to a system where only the top two teams go through from each group, which creates greater jeopardy and hopefully more exciting matches in the group stages.\u201d<\/p>\n I agree. Instinctively, it feels wrong, but practically it might well be right. I would, though, like to know more about the logistics, as we don\u2019t want a situation where only a few countries have the infrastructure required to host.<\/p>\n Share<\/a>Share<\/a><\/p>\n I must say I\u2019m torn. Of course, I\u2019m prejudiced against it simply by virtue of Infantino wanting it, but I can\u2019t deny that expanded competitions \u2013 in the Euros too \u2013 give us something different, countries otherwise excluded enriching the experience. Moreover, were we to go to 64, we\u2019d be rid of the third-place qualification situation, which allows teams to move on having beaten the worst side in their group and no more; we\u2019d no longer play 72 matches to lose just 16 teams.
