Not anymore. Now it’s one of the fastest-growing fan bases on Earth. There’s a reason everyone’s hooked.

There’s this wild transformation happening in sports right now. Formula 1, which has been around since 1950, is suddenly everywhere. Theaters, social media and friends who didn’t know what a DRS zone was are talking about it like they’ve followed it forever.

So, what exactly is happening? How does a sport with 20 drivers zipping around at 200 mph suddenly become a full-blown global phenomenon? There’s no one answer, but the explanation is pretty fascinating, and if you haven’t started following yet, you’re going to want to see what all the noise is about.

F1 is massive

Let’s just start with the sheer size. In 2024, Formula 1’s global fan base hit 826.5 million, that’s an increase of almost 90 million in one year, according to Nielsen Sports. That’s nearly a billion F1 fans. The momentum didn’t stop, either; in 2025, it climbed to 827 million. F1 saw a 12% jump from the year before, and a 63% rise since 2018.

And it’s not just happening in one part of the world. China saw a 39% spike in fans. Canada went up by 31.5%. Argentina and Saudi Arabia, both 25.5%. F1 has pushed hard in the US, and now there are 52 million American fans, a 10.5% bump in one year.

Live events is where F1 really delivers

Nothing matches the buzz of being trackside, and more fans than ever are feeling it firsthand. In 2025, total attendance smashed records: 6.7 million people went to a race. Nineteen events sold out. Four races saw over 400,000 people each, with Australia hitting 465,000 and Britain topping 500,000.

And for American fans who want to dive even deeper, F1’s connection to the sports betting world is growing. If you’re in Pennsylvania and want to get involved, like betting on winners, fastest laps or constructors, this PA casino bonus analysis lays out everything you need for online gambling, from casino and sportsbook reviews to best bonus analysis, guides and news updates. Pretty handy if you want to mix racing with a little wagering.

Drive to survive changed everything

Ask new fans how they got into F1, and you’ll usually get the same response: Drive to Survive. The Netflix docuseries that dropped in 2019 was a game changer, it was the first time fans got a real backstage look at this high-pressure, secretive circus.

More than half of F1 fans, 53%, say the show had something to do with their joining the party, and 30% called it a “major reason”. Among fans under 45, almost three out of four say the show played a role.

F1 goes Hollywood

If Drive to Survive lit the fuse, F1: The Movie blew everything up. Released in the summer of 2025, starring Brad Pitt as a comeback driver with a new team, it turned into a colossal hit. The movie pulled in over $634 million worldwide, which makes it the top-grossing auto racing movie ever, the top-grossing movie for Apple and Brad Pitt’s biggest box office hit yet. It’s also the highest-grossing sports movie of all time.

What made the movie stand out was how tightly it was woven into real F1. Movie crews filmed during actual Grand Prix weekends. Drivers, real teams and fans in the stands saw a Hollywood movie being made live while watching a real race. For hardcore supporters, that was unreal. For newcomers, it was the ultimate introduction.

Social media is where the real fan base lives

Since 2017, F1’s management has put social media front and center. The old owners kept F1 clips off YouTube and Twitter, which left the fan base shrinking and getting older. In 2018, F1 had just 18 million followers on social media. In 2025? 106 million. That’s a wild turnaround.

For the fifth year running, Formula 1 is the fastest-growing sports league on social media, notching over 2.3 billion engagements. That tops the NBA, UEFA Champions League, NFL and Premier League.

Who’s actually watching?

The shift in who’s watching F1 is just as dramatic as the growth. For decades, F1’s audience was mostly older men. Not anymore. Now, 43% of fans are under 35. In the last year, that group grew by 51 million. More than half (57%) of all new fans in the past year are under 35.

Here’s where it gets even more interesting: Women now make up 42% of fans globally according to Kym Illman. This isn’t just about diversity numbers. A younger, more balanced audience means fans who’ll stick around for decades, who interact with the sport in different ways and bring new perspectives. F1 is actually cool now, it’s become a badge of identity, not just a weekend hobby.

F1 used to be a niche sport, something outsiders thought was just for Europeans obsessed with fast cars.…

[441
49,48,578,576,577,82
post-799582","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-formula-1","tag-ca","tag-canada","tag-f1","tag-formula-1","tag-formula1","tag-sports
["GET
