By now everyone has heard of Christopher Nolan\u2019s epic film \u201cThe Odyssey.\u201d Landing in theaters on Friday, July 17, the new movie is being hailed as the summer\u2019s biggest blockbuster, if not the cinematic event of the year.<\/p>\n
Even so, Robert Pattinson, who plays Antinous, one of Penelope\u2019s suitors, revealed during an interview with TODAY correspondent Kaylee Hartung that when Nolan first approached him to join the cast, he hesitated before signing on.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy first thought always with a part is like, \u2018I don\u2019t know if I can do anything.\u2019 But sometimes I get more scared if someone\u2019s saying, just off the bat, \u2018Do you want to do this thing?\u2019\u201d Pattinson said of his initial reaction. \u201cMy imposter syndrome kicks in very, very hard.\u201d<\/p>\n
Widely known for his role as Edward Cullen in the \u201cTwilight\u201d films and for playing the dark knight in \u201cThe Batman\u201d franchise, Pattison previously worked with Nolan on the 2020 sci-fi film \u201cTenet.\u201d <\/p>\n
Despite his initial misgivings over teaming up with the director again, Pattinson ultimately accepted Nolan\u2019s offer to play Antinous, the scheming suitor who plots to marry Penelope and destroy her son, Telemachus, played by Anne Hathaway and Tom Holland, respectively. <\/p>\n
Should you need a primer, \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d is based on Homer\u2019s 12,100-line poem by the same name, approximately written down in the 7th century.<\/p>\n
The legendary tale chronicles the journey of Odysseus, king of the Greek island of Ithaca, who leaves his wife, Penelope, and son, Telemachus, to lead the Trojan War. <\/p>\n
After a decade of battle, Odysseus triumphs and begins the long voyage home. It\u2019s a quest that takes him years. Along the way, he encounters a variety of life-and-death challenges handed down from the gods.<\/p>\n
In his absence, dozens of opportunistic suiters descend upon his kingdom, each hoping to marry Penelope and steal the throne. <\/p>\n
Among them? The sinister Antinous. While the character is arguably one of the biggest villains of the film, Pattison doesn\u2019t quite see it that way.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s funny,\u201d he told TODAY. \u201cI just think Antinous isn\u2019t that bad. Like, I\u2019m slightly worried now, because maybe if I watch it with an audience I\u2019ll be, like, horrified. Because I watch it and I\u2019m just like, \u2018He\u2019s just a guy.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
Villain or not, Pattison said that he sees his character as having a certain glamour and to help get into character, he worked with the costume department to ensure that the materials used for his wardrobe gave Antinous the appearance of privilege and wealth, right down to his underwear.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs soon as I read the script, I\u2019m like, \u2018I want to have cheetah underpants,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cI think Antinous is that kind of guy. He has this kind of sensuousness about him; \u2018I just like pleasure.\u2019 And so I was kind of thinking you want to have the most luxurious underpants he can.\u201d<\/p>\n
All underwear aside, Pattinson, whose performance in \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d is already being widely acclaimed by critics, said that if Nolan comes calling for another film, there\u2019ll be no hesitation this time.<\/p>\n
