Abbotsford loses 700 jobs, dropping employment rate by 0.4%<\/p>\n

After experiencing a substantial jump in unemployment in May, Abbotsford has managed to hold steady in June, maintaining the worst unemployment rate the city has seen in more than four years.<\/p>\n
Statistics Canada reported that 700 local jobs were lost last month, bringing the city to its lowest number of jobs since November 2025.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
As a result of these lost jobs, the local employment rate dropped from 61.5 per cent to 61.1 per cent. Abbotsford hasn\u2019t seen a lower employment rate in almost two and a half years.<\/p>\n
Despite the number of jobs and employment rate both going down, Abbotsford\u2019s unemployment rate held steady at 8.4 per cent.<\/p>\n
While not an increase, it is still tied for the highest unemployment rate since Statistics Canada started tracking Abbotsford numbers in 2022.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
The province as a whole saw improvements across the board in June, with a total of 7,800 new jobs added throughout B.C.<\/p>\n
This improved the provincial employment rate by 0.2 per cent and also lowered the unemployment rate by 0.3 per cent, giving B.C. the third-biggest unemployment decrease in the country.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
Jobs and Economic Growth Minister Ravi Kahlon said the provincial government is particularly proud that B.C. is leading the country in the growth of youth employment, and said this recent progress is only the start of what\u2019s to come.<\/p>\n
\u201dIn June, Premier David Eby secured a landmark agreement with the federal government that will help unlock billions in investments for major projects, skills training, clean-energy infrastructure, and economic development throughout British Columbia \u2013 representing opportunities worth an estimated $20 billion for people, businesses, and communities throughout the province,\u201d said Kahlon.<\/p>\n
