Federal Representative Ira\u00eds Reyes and Senator Luis Donaldo Colosio Riojas, both from the Movimiento Ciudadano party, have announced plans to file an antitrust complaint before Mexico\u2019s Comisi\u00f3n Nacional Antimonopolio. Their argument: Sony\u2019s move could violate Mexico\u2019s Federal Economic Competition Law<\/a>. This isn\u2019t a format debate. It\u2019s a fight over who controls access to entertainment.<\/p>\n

What Sony Actually Announced<\/p>\n

Sony confirmed on July 1, 2026<\/a>, that disc production for all new PlayStation titles stops in January 2028, according to Reuters. New games will only exist as PlayStation Store downloads or retailer-sold download codes \u2014 a plastic box with a slip of paper inside, not a disc. What the Mexican Complaint Argues<\/p>\n

Lawmakers say Sony would become \u201cboth the referee and the player\u201d inside its own ecosystem.<\/p>\n

Roughly 1.7 million Dutch PlayStation users are already in court over this \u2014 but Mexico\u2019s complaint zeroes in on specific, concrete harms:<\/p>\n

\u201cIf discs disappear, anyone who owns a PlayStation will no longer be able to choose where to buy their games and will be forced to purchase them exclusively through Sony\u2019s store,\u201d Reyes state<\/a>d, according to LevelUp. The complaint frames Sony\u2019s vertical integration \u2014 hardware, storefront, distribution, pricing, licensing \u2014 as a \u201crelative monopolistic practice\u201d under Mexican law. Senator Colosio adds that when a consumer buys digitally, they aren\u2019t purchasing a game in any traditional sense; they\u2019re acquiring a license, on Sony\u2019s terms, revocable at Sony\u2019s discretion.<\/p>\n

Mexico Isn\u2019t Alone<\/p>\n

A Dutch class-action lawsuit now seeking over \u20ac400 million cites Sony\u2019s disc-free announcement as fresh evidence of a closed pricing monopoly.<\/p>\n

Dutch nonprofit Stichting Massaschade & Consument escalated its \u201cFair PlayStation\u201d lawsuit<\/a> on behalf of those roughly 1.7 million users, targeting Sony\u2019s 30% store commission as an effective pricing monopoly once physical alternatives disappear.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo discs means no second-hand market and no alternative to the PlayStation Store, so from 2028, Sony alone decides what a game costs and even how long you are allowed to use it,\u201d foundation chair Lucia Melcherts told PCGuide<\/a>. Think of it as the Apple App Store wars \u2014 except your $500 console is the walled garden, and there\u2019s no sideloading escape hatch.<\/p>\n

If Mexico\u2019s regulator opens a formal investigation, Sony<\/a> could face fines or mandated distribution alternatives.
