This discovery offers a rare look at how some of the universe&#8217;s most extreme objects accelerate particles to nearly the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15830-light-speed.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15830-light-speed.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">speed of light<\/a>, according to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/missions\/ixpe\/nasa-space-telescope-maps-magnetic-fields-of-lighthouse-pulsar\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">a statement<\/a> from the space agency.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-aeb2ce38-7efd-11f1-9ca1-3b04339742a7-2\"><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/32661-pulsars.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/32661-pulsars.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pulsars<\/a> are rapidly rotating <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22180-neutron-stars.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22180-neutron-stars.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">neutron stars<\/a> \u2014 the ultra-dense remnants left behind when massive stars explode as supernovas. Their powerful magnetic fields channel beams of radiation from their magnetic poles that sweep across space as the stars spin, much like the beam of a lighthouse.<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-9022d19e-7f01-11f1-a240-2754c0a7ba1f\">PSR J1101\u22126101, which is located at the center of the Lighthouse Nebula, spins about 16 times every second and is traveling at supersonic speeds after receiving a powerful kick from the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/6638-supernova.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/6638-supernova.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">supernova<\/a> that created it. As it tears through interstellar gas, it leaves behind a bright X-ray tail while producing a narrow filament that juts out almost perpendicular to its direction of travel. Astronomers had long suspected this unusual structure traced energetic electrons escaping along the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/19915-milky-way-galaxy.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/19915-milky-way-galaxy.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Milky Way&#8217;s<\/a> magnetic field.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We wanted to test that theory,&#8221;Jack Dinsmore, lead author of the study and undergraduate student at Stanford University, said in the statement. &#8220;The &#8216;smoking gun&#8217; would come by measuring the polarization of the light, which indicates the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/the-universe\/where-did-the-universes-magnetic-fields-come-from\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/the-universe\/where-did-the-universes-magnetic-fields-come-from\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">magnetic field<\/a> direction. If the magnetic field points along the filament, that confirms that the filament&#8217;s particles are flowing along the field.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p>Unlike conventional X-ray telescopes, IXPE measures the polarization of X-rays \u2014 the preferred orientation of their electric fields \u2014 allowing scientists to reconstruct the geometry of otherwise invisible magnetic fields. Because the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nebula-definition-types\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nebula-definition-types\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lighthouse Nebula<\/a> is relatively faint in X-rays, the researchers developed new analysis techniques to extract as much information as possible from the observations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:56.25%;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/bcSfbuWXJrdw9nMuthz7zE.jpg\" alt=\"A full view of the composite IXPE helped construct. But the observations also uncovered an unexpected twist: the field is far more orderly than scientists anticipated.
