Introduction<\/p>\n

Long approach shots aren\u2019t regular occurrences in a round of golf (unless you\u2019re playing the wrong tees), but they can play an outsized role in your scoring and enjoyment.\u00a0 Knock it close on a 200 yard par 3 and you\u2019re on cloud nine.\u00a0 If you need three shots to find that green, however, you\u2019re going to curse that hole all day.<\/p>\n

New for 2026, Tour Edge is offering golfers two affordable ways to make those long approach shots easier.\u00a0 The\u00a0Tour Edge Hot Launch Max hybrid and its draw biased Max D counterpart hope to earn a spot in your bag with their attractive price and forgiving ways.<\/p>\n

Looks<\/p>\n

Like the other new Hot Launch clubs, the\u00a0Tour Edge Hot Launch Max hybrid has a clean, gloss black crown.\u00a0 There are no graphics outside of the small, white \u201cTE\u201d alignment aid.\u00a0 This is a much more traditional look than we saw in the E525 and X525 hybrids we got from Tour Edge last year [review HERE<\/a>].<\/p>\n

In the bag, the Hot Launch Max family has a consistent look as well.\u00a0 The sole is divided into three sections by two wide grooves.\u00a0 Tour Edge limited the color to black and white with the exception of the large blue weight at the trailing edge.<\/p>\n

Comparing the Tour Edge Hot Launch Max hybrid (right) to the Max D hybrid (left), the most important aesthetic \u2013 and performance \u2013 difference is the offset.\u00a0 Digging a bit deeper, the Hot Launch Max has a more conventional hybrid shape \u2013 longer and thinner \u2013 with just a little tapering toward the heel.\u00a0 The Hot Launch Max D hybrid is rounder, a bit thicker, flirting with fairway wood dimensions.\u00a0 It also sits noticeably more closed at address. \nSound & Feel<\/p>\n

In my initial testing, I worked my way up from the Hot Launch Max irons [review HERE<\/a>] to the hybrids.\u00a0 The bar had been set high by the irons, and the\u00a0Tour Edge Hot Launch Max hybrid did a fair job meeting it.\u00a0 At impact, the sound is metallic and high pitched but below average in volume.\u00a0 I traditionally think of this as more of a fairway wood sound, but it\u2019s quite normal for many hybrids, too.\u00a0 The feel is more thin and quick than solid, which meshes well with the sound.<\/p>\n

Both the Tour Edge Hot Launch Max hybrid and the Max D have ample audio feedback.\u00a0 On center, both have a strong metallic sound.\u00a0 Off center, they\u2019re dull and lower pitched.\u00a0 Neither club offers precise feedback through the hands, so you need to be content with a general idea of where your mishit struck the face.<\/p>\n

Performance<\/p>\n

Of any of the Hot Launch Max clubs, I found the two hybrids to be the most similar in terms of performance.\u00a0 Thanks to their large rear weight, both of these clubs are very forgiving.\u00a0 The club feels stable on misses all over the face.\u00a0 Both the Max and Max D keep the ball flying in the direction of its intended target as long as you get the face reasonably square.<\/p>\n

These two hybrids are also similar in their ability to create and retain ball speed.\u00a0 On my best swings, I got both of these clubs to produce ball speed that was just short of elite.\u00a0 The difference between the Hot Launch and the fastest hybrids was measurable on a launch monitor, but on the range there was no noticeable gap.\u00a0 That speed stayed fairly high thanks to Tour Edge\u2019s \u201cdiamond-shaped variable thickness zones\u201d across the face.<\/p>\n

Another similarity is that both of these hybrids have face shapes that are more like fairway woods than irons.\u00a0 This helps them to elevate shots off the turf, particularly when contact is less than ideal.\u00a0 While both proved capable of getting good height and distance out of a mishit, the Hot Launch Max D was slightly better, producing a higher ball flight and more carry distance.<\/p>\n

\"Tour<\/p>\n

The two areas where these clubs diverge meaningfully is in shot shape and spin.\u00a0 That the Hot Launch Max D produces a heavier draw should be obvious: it has offset and a closed face.\u00a0 Both Tour Edge Hot Launch Max hybrids prefer to go left, but the Max D really wants to go left.\u00a0 I could keep the Max straight with a little effort, but the Max D required a concerted push to not draw.<\/p>\n

On both mishits and pure strikes, I saw the Hot Launch Max D produce more spin than the Max.\u00a0 In this way, the hybrids are like the fairway woods [review HERE<\/a>] and drivers [review HERE<\/a>].\u00a0 For me, the Tour Edge Hot Launch Max hybrid produced above average spin and the Max D was well above average \u2013 several hundred RPM more than the Max.\u00a0 As always, spin is not objectively good or bad, it\u2019s a matter of fit.\u00a0 If I were looking at a higher lofted hybrid, I would want more spin to promote softer landings.\u00a0 In a pure distance hybrid, I want just enough spin to keep the ball airborne. Conclusion<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re looking to try a new approach on those long shots into the green, the\u00a0Tour Edge Hot Launch Max hybrids are solid options that won\u2019t empty your pockets.\u00a0 These are solid, no-nonsense long game tools that will perform well for the majority of recreational players.
