When Delicious Orie took just four rounds to beat Milos Veletic in his professional boxing debut at the Co-op Live last April \u2013 just three years on from a Commonwealth Games gold medal in Birmingham \u2013 you\u2019d have been forgiven for thinking a long and illustrious, 20-bout career lay ahead of him.<\/p>\n
But the 29-year-old Moscow-born Brit is a boxer no more, having ripped up a high-profile deal with Frank Warren\u2019s Queensberry Promotions<\/a> and swapped sparring for spreadsheets as a financial advisor<\/a>.<\/p>\n Speaking to City AM, Orie describes how the idea of being whacked around in training by the likes of Oleksandr Usyk before being rolled out on a fight night just didn\u2019t do it for him anymore.<\/p>\n \u201c[Matchroom promoter] Eddie Hearn gave me an offer but I politely refused,\u201d he says. \u201cI was in a good position and so it was quite a big shock to the world when I announced my retirement.<\/p>\n \u201cIt just didn\u2019t push me on anymore. I just felt like it just wasn\u2019t me and I thought, \u2018Right, I need that fire; I need to push onto something I actually really enjoy doing\u2019.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cI had my first experience as a professional fighter and I thought, \u2018Do you know what, have I got another 20 of these in me? No\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n The business of boxing<\/p>\n Nearly a year into his career with London-based financial planner Attivo, where Orie has blitzed exams in the hope of becoming an advisor to athletes, the 2023 European Games champion makes a connection between the money flowing around the ring \u2013 so much of which is coming from the Middle East, broadcasters and promoters \u2013 and his wider outlook on boxing.<\/p>\n \u201cBoxing is not money-orientated in the amateurs \u2013 you\u2019ve got the Commonwealths and you\u2019ve got the Olympics and all you think about is the medals,\u201d he says.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cBut then you go into the pros and you really see the inner workings of business and how you get managers and guys behind the scenes \u2013 the likes of Eddie, for example.<\/p>\n \u201cI would have at the back of my mind that the world that they\u2019re involved in, I can also be involved in \u2013 not as a promoter, but just involved in that business.<\/p>\n \t\t\t\t\tRead more<\/p>\n \t\t\tUK Government warns Joe Joyce against travelling to Russia for Moscow fight<\/a><\/p>\n \u201cBut then you have people on the side \u2013 there\u2019s some real good people, I had a fantastic lawyer and a really good manager, so I was actually one of the lucky ones \u2013 who don\u2019t give the best advice.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019ve seen first hand the low barrier to entry into the boxing world. It\u2019s like the Wild West, unfortunately. There\u2019s a lot of money to be made but, at the same time, if boxers are not careful, a lot of people can take advantage.\u201d<\/p>\n
