\n\tThe singer, who judge Sofia Vergara said reminded her of Beyonc\u00e9 \u2014\u00a0the white cowboy hat, cowboy boots, oversized earrings and cascading braids helped \u2014 confidently sang the tune with a clap-along beat and lyrics about washing away sins in the cold water. \u201cI dig down deep to cleanse my soul\/ Came up clean, but I can\u2019t let go\/ It\u2019s one thing I won\u2019t forget\/ I forgive but I won\u2019t forget,\u201d she crooned to the audience\u2019s whoops. <\/p>\n
\n\tVergara whispered to fellow judge Simon Cowell, \u201cit\u2019s nice,\u201d as he asked if she liked the song and she said \u201cno.\u201d Though the studio audience appeared to love it, Mel B praised Elsie\u2019s \u201camazing\u201d voice, even as she suggested that the song choice was a mistake. \u201cI think your voice is so much bigger and better than what you just showed us,\u201d she added, as Elsie became emotional and started to tear up.<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cYou\u2019re beautiful, your vocals are on point, but I think you\u2019ve got a lot more in the tank,\u201d said the former Spice Girl. Howie Mandel agreed, saying he thought she looked and sounded like a star from the moment she walked out on stage, but he also worried that the overwhelming backing track made it hard to really hear who she was as a singer.<\/p>\n
\n\tVergara said Elsie looked and sounded spectacular, but may have missed the mark by performing her original tune. \u201cI didn\u2019t love the song, but I did love you,\u201d she said, drawing a lusty round of boos and thumbs-downs from the audience. Cowell begged to differ, however, telling Elsie she had \u201ceverything it takes\u201d to do well in the competition, though he felt she\u2019d \u201cover-prepped\u201d and needed to let go of the reins and allow herself to be more raw. \u201cYou have star potential \u2026 you have a glow about you,\u201d Cowell said.<\/p>\n
\n\tWhen it came time to vote, Mandel gave it a firm \u201cno,\u201d while the rest of the panel voted to let Elsie through to the next round. AGT airs at 8 p.m. ET on NBC on Tuesdays and streams the next day on Peacock.<\/p>\n
