{"id":80546,"date":"2025-08-19T06:37:11","date_gmt":"2025-08-19T06:37:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/80546\/"},"modified":"2025-08-19T06:37:11","modified_gmt":"2025-08-19T06:37:11","slug":"harford-county-community-members-protest-school-districts-ban-of-controversial-book","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/80546\/","title":{"rendered":"Harford County community members protest school district&#8217;s ban of controversial book"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Harford County community members protested on Monday the school board&#8217;s decision to ban the illustrated novel\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:https:\/\/www.mikecurato.com\/flamer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">&#8220;Flamer,&#8221; by Mike Curato<\/a>, from its libraries.<\/p>\n<p>The community members held signs outside of the Harford County Board of Education ahead of a meeting in Bel Air.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/baltimore\/news\/harford-county-parents-teachers-protest-banned-book-flamer-mike-curato\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Members of the advocacy group &#8220;Together We Will Harford County&#8221; <\/a>organized the protest after the school board voted to ban the illustrated novel from school libraries in June.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The controversial novel is about a teenage boy who, as he &#8220;navigates friendships, deals with bullies, and spends time with Elias (a boy he can&#8217;t stop thinking about), he finds himself on a path of self-discovery and acceptance,&#8221;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mikecurato.com\/flamer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according to the author<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>      <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/flamer.png#.png\" alt=\"flamer.png \" height=\"295\" width=\"620\" class=\" lazyload\"  loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I feel that the school board is buckling under political pressure from a small group of citizens that have an agenda,&#8221; said Gary, a protester.<\/p>\n<p>The book ban was not on the agenda for Monday&#8217;s board meeting, but people who oppose the decision as well as people who support it spoke during the school board meeting&#8217;s public comment.<\/p>\n<p>Against the book ban<\/p>\n<p>The book,\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:https:\/\/www.mikecurato.com\/flamer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">&#8220;Flamer,&#8221; by Mike Curato<\/a>, was previously approved by district committees. However, after an appeal from a parent, the board voted 5-3 in June to remove it, making it the first book pulled under a new review policy.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This was the first book to be removed by the district, after it created a process to\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:https:\/\/www.hcps.org\/departments\/docs\/Curriculum\/LibraryMedia\/Procedure_Evaluation_and_Selection_of_School_Library_Materials.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">review books<\/a>\u00a0flagged by concerned parents.<\/p>\n<p>Protesters say the book ban threatens students&#8217; rights.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In the school system, parents can opt out of any book that they want for their child.
