{"id":806239,"date":"2026-07-16T19:05:29","date_gmt":"2026-07-16T19:05:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/806239\/"},"modified":"2026-07-16T19:05:29","modified_gmt":"2026-07-16T19:05:29","slug":"quebec-construction-holiday-sq-urges-safety-on-roads-trails-water-after-38-deaths-reported-last-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/806239\/","title":{"rendered":"Quebec construction holiday: SQ urges safety on roads, trails, water after 38 deaths reported last year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The S\u00fbret\u00e9 du Qu\u00e9bec (SQ) says it will be stepping up police presence in the province for the two-week construction holiday.<\/p>\n<p>The SQ says it\u2019s increasing its operations on roads, trails and bodies of water \u2014 from July 17 to Aug. 2.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities say during Quebec\u2019s construction holiday last year there were 38 deaths, the worst in the past 10 years, linked to collisions, including with off-road vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis alarming statistic serves as a reminder that safety on transportation networks is a shared responsibility and that everyone can help prevent tragedies by staying vigilant and following safety rules,\u201d the SQ said in a news release.<\/p>\n<p>About one-third of Quebecers take time off during this period, which increases traffic on the road network and crowds on bodies of water and trails.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Image-2026-07-16T104117.838-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-494995\" style=\"width:879px;height:auto\"  \/>Construction sign seen in downtown Montreal on July 16, 2026 (Martin Daigle, CityNews)<\/p>\n<p>Quebec\u2019s auto-insurance board, SAAQ, also warned drivers that speeding was a factor in more than a quarter of the deaths reported in the summer months.
