LeBron James is leaving the basketball world guessing about his next team, but the NBA icon has offered a direct explanation for why he is preparing to continue playing at an age when nearly every other great has already stepped away.

James appeared at Fanatics FanFest NYC on Thursday for a live recording of his “Mind the Game” podcast, joined by Indiana Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton. The event came as the 41-year-old weighs his next move after informing the Los Angeles Lakers that he intends to enter free agency.

LeBron James got roasted by Kevin Hart over 3-1 comeback

His destination remains uncertain, with the Cavaliers, Heat, 76ers and Warriors among the teams linked to the four-time champion. James didn’t name a preferred landing spot, although he suggested he is excited by what comes next.

“It’s going to be pretty fun wherever I land,” James said.

Haliburton tried to press him on the subject during the live show, but James made it clear that he would not reveal more.

“We literally talked about this backstage,” James said. Haliburton replied, “OK. OK. I’ll leave it alone.”

James still loves the challenge

James said the decision to pursue a 24th season isn’t simply about adding to a résumé already filled with milestones. He still enjoys the demands of the sport and the opportunity to face the best players in the world.

“I love to play, man. I love the competition. I love going out there, playing against the best in the world and still being able to inspire the younger generation, also inspire my generation,” James said.

“It’s a lot of people in my age bracket, not only in sports, but also just in life just seeing if they can still put up the same effort that they did maybe five years ago or 10 years ago and still give it all that they’ve got.”

James entered the NBA as the Cavaliers’ first overall pick in 2003, coming directly from St. Vincent-St. Mary High School in Akron. Twenty-three seasons later, he remains one of the league’s most influential players.

His accomplishments include four NBA titles, four MVP awards, four Finals MVPs and 22 All-Star selections. Yet James suggested that the example he sets away from the numbers matters just as much.

“I’m trying to inspire the younger generation and also my generation – people that came before me and after,” he said.

Family and leadership shape next move

James acknowledged that free agency is a major decision, particularly at this stage of his career.

“How do I feel about free agency? Obviously, it’s a big decision,” James said. “This is the third time in my career that I’ve been a free agent.”

“So, it’s a big decision for not only myself, but for my family as well and just for the last part of my career and where I want to spend the last few years or the last year or the last two years of my NBA career.”

He said he intends to bring leadership and experience to whichever organization he joins.

“I’m a natural born leader. I’m going to try to fit into whatever team I’m going into, but also give them all the tools and give them all the knowledge that I’ve been able to grasp over the last 23 years,” James said.

The next chapter remains unknown. His motivation, though, is as clear as ever in that James still believes he has something meaningful to give the game.

LeBron James is leaving the basketball world guessing about his next team, but the NBA icon has offered…

[434
49,48,459,82
post-806267","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-nba","tag-ca","tag-canada","tag-nba","tag-sports
["GET
