One of the many reasons The X-Files<\/a> ranks among the most beloved genre shows of all time is that it wasn\u2019t afraid to be weird<\/a>. It wasn\u2019t afraid to be scary<\/a>. But, for its first trip to the big screen<\/a>, creator Chris Carter was told to make things a little less scary in order to get a PG-13 rating. Almost 20 years have passed since then, but next month, fans will get to see the full version of what Carter planned for Mulder and Scully\u2019s theatrical debut.<\/p>\n

After a slight delay, Disney just officially announced \u201cthe brand new, never-before-seen R-rated Chris Carter Director\u2019s Cut\u201d of 2008\u2019s The X-Files: I Want to Believe is coming to Hulu on August 14. The film will \u201cfaithfully restore the filmmaker\u2019s original vision\u201d and, to make sure fans know the difference, it\u2019s got a new title: The X-Files: I Want to Believe Vrach Frankenshteyn.<\/p>\n

Google Translate tells us that \u201cVrach Frankenshteyn\u201d is Russian for \u201cVictor Frankenstein,\u201d who we\u2019re pretty sure is not a character in the film (unless this is a freaking wild director\u2019s cut). So, we\u2019d imagine, the title is just a fun allusion to how this version has been put back together and has risen from the dead.<\/p>\n

News of the director\u2019s cut first broke back in the summer of 2025 when Carter appeared on David Duchovny\u2019s podcast, Fail Better\u00a0with David Duchovny<\/a>. \u201cI made it too scary,\u201d Carter said at the time. \u201cNow I have a chance to go back and make the scary movie that I always intended.\u201d<\/p>\n

A year later, the director\u2019s cut mysteriously appeared on a listing of upcoming shows and films coming to Disney+<\/a> in June 2026, but when the date finally arrived, the film was nowhere to be found. Polygon<\/a> reported the delay was \u201cdue to some last-minute adjustments being made to the film.\u201d Well, it seems those adjustments have been made.<\/p>\n

So what was added? How much scarier is it? Will it, in any way, change what we know and love about Mulder and Scully? Audiences will find out on August 14. Are you ready to believe?<\/p>\n
