The Winnipeg Jets released their full regular season schedule Thursday, and not only is it the earliest start in NHL history, for the first time since the 90s, but each team will play a total of 84 games in the 26-27 season.

“I think that’s fine; I mean it might make the season tickets go up a bit. I don’t know; I haven’t actually looked into that,” said John Frost, a Jets fan.

Sean Reynolds, a Jets reporter for Sportsnet, said, “I like it because there’s always this long pre season that kind of feels like they’re just holding games for the sake of holding games, now they’ve added meaning to those games, taking away some of the pre season games, adding some games that matter, that matter in the standings, that’re gonna matter in the box office for teams, so I think it’s a good thing all around.”

With a total of 1,344 games played, it will be the biggest season in league history, and starting the season earlier should help wrap up the playoffs quicker, and as Reynolds says, keeping a winter sport a winter sport.

“I don’t think anyone wants hockey to be bumping up and getting close to July long weekend. A couple of years ago I did Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final, I was talking to players on the ice after winning the cup on June 24, that’s too late in the season.”

Although the Jets’ season last year was nothing short of disappointing, going from Presidents’ Trophy winners to missing the playoffs, there is some hope heading into the season.

“I feel good. Ya know they played a lot of hockey over the last couple years so sometimes you just run into a rut,” said Frost.

Reynolds says, “We don’t know who this Winnipeg Jets team is gonna be. Are they going to be more like the team that missed the playoffs last year? Or are they going to be more like the team a couple previous years that won the Presidents’ Trophy and finished fourth in the league the year before that. We’re going to get those answers pretty quick.”

The Jets will kick off their regular season at home versus the Boston Bruins on Friday, October 4, five days earlier than last season.
