After that, <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC2804956\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC2804956\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"researchers have suggested\" data-node-id=\"13.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">researchers have suggested<\/a> that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/a68070777\/muscle-gives-you-freedom-science-lean-mass-youth\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/a68070777\/muscle-gives-you-freedom-science-lean-mass-youth\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"muscle mass\" data-node-id=\"13.3\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">muscle mass<\/a> then decreases by around 3-8% per decade, with that rate of decline increasing after the age of 60.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"18\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">But as Piatka highlights, that\u2019s if you don\u2019t train it \u2013 there\u2019s a whole lot that we can do to significantly slow, manage and sometimes even reverse sarcopenia.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"23\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">And by training, she isn\u2019t necessarily referring to hours of sweaty, gruelling gym work. Rather, she means simple, consistent habits that you can embed into your daily routine \u2013 like the below core exercises.<\/p>\n<p>Why is core strength so important?<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"28\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">A strong core is crucial for extending your healthspan (the years of your life spent in good health) because as Piatka flags, it \u2018supports everything: your posture, your back and your confidence in how you move\u2019. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"33\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">One recent <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC12548199\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC12548199\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"review\" data-node-id=\"33.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">review<\/a> published in the scientific journal Frontiers in Public Health found that core training significantly improved older adults\u2019 balance performance \u2013 vital for reducing fall risk with age.  <\/p>\n<p>The exercises <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"39\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">In her Instagram post, Piatka highlighted four simple plank variations that she recommends doing daily to both build and maintain core strength.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"43\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">\u2018These plank variations fire up your entire core while improving <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/a69726959\/simple-balance-exercises-healthy-ageing\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/a69726959\/simple-balance-exercises-healthy-ageing\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"balance\" data-node-id=\"43.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">balance<\/a> and control,\u2019 she captioned the post.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"47\" class=\"body-tip css-1c5elkc emevuu60\">Keep your stomach pulled in to engage your core as effectively as possible, aiming for smooth, controlled movements.<\/p>\n<p>1.
