A partnership between the school of architecture and landscape architecture (SALA) at the University of British Columbia and Metro Vancouver has caught the attention of residents in Boundary Bay.<\/p>\n
UBC\u2019s Master of Architecture graduate students have been building a project called The Perch, a feature pavilion located in Boundary Bay Regional Park.<\/p>\n
As an alternative to a conventional thesis, a team of 12 students has undertaken the design and construction of the project in collaboration with Metro Vancouver. Through this Design+Build initiative, The Perch aims to enrich the visitor experience and deepen engagement with the park\u2019s natural landscape.<\/p>\n
The project is a design-build that\u2019s the equivalent of a thesis for a group of students – the first time SALA is doing something like this.<\/p>\n
The project is led by assistant professor James Huemoeller.<\/p>\n
\u201cI have a practice and I do work with Metro Vancouver – several historical renovation projects. We have done projects in the past on campus, but nothing before that the public could see, so we wanted to do something that could showcase our work, research and how we work to improve architecture,\u201d he said. \u201cI reached out to Metro, specifically the parks division seeing if there was a project that we could partner on that helps our students build skills, so they can go out into the workforce, but also give you, in this case, Metro Vancouver, something that benefits the public and enjoy a unique structure that adds to the experience.\u201d<\/p>\n
He said it was a good partnership given the demands that Metro Vancouver wanted the students to fulfill.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey expected something top notch, but that\u2019s what we wanted for the students\u2026asking tough questions and it made for a great partnership,\u201d he said. \u201cThis was a year-long project that they did before they graduated. We fabricated the structure using a robotic arm that we have here on campus, so the students learned how to develop the design, cut the pieces and the forms that you wouldn\u2019t be able to create using normal tools.<\/p>\n
\u201cCompanies are starting to demand students who have more innovative skills with new technology sets, so this was a good way to build on those skills. The students designed the structure with Metro Vancouver in January and work is wrapping up.\u201d<\/p>\n
