Canadian Press<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The federal government is nearly doubling the amount of public donations it will match for Venezuelans still reeling from devastating earthquakes last month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The Carney government announced last month it would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/canada\/article-ottawa-match-4-million-donations-for-venezuelans-earthquake\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/canada\/article-ottawa-match-4-million-donations-for-venezuelans-earthquake\/\">match up to $4-million<\/a> in donations from Canadians for Venezuelans needing food, shelter, medicine and clothing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Randeep Sarai, secretary of state for international development, announced today Canada is boosting that maximum to $7-million because the original matching limit was quickly reached.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text mv-16 l-inset text-pb-8\" data-sophi-feature=\"interstitial\"><a which is going directly to aid groups, will help the Red Cross and the dozen Canadian organizations making up the Humanitarian Coalition to help people on the ground.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/world\/article-venezuela-doublet-earthquakes-caracas-natural-disaster\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/world\/article-venezuela-doublet-earthquakes-caracas-natural-disaster\/\">Rare double earthquakes<\/a> struck northern Venezuela 39 seconds apart last month and the authoritarian government has struggled to respond.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">If the match is fully funded, Ottawa will have contributed $12-million in
