The Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority (SSMRCA) is issuing this Flood Outlook Statement to advise residents and visitors of current and forecasted watershed conditions throughout the region. Flood forecasting and warning services are part of the SSMRCA\u2019s provincially mandated responsibilities. This statement is intended to increase awareness of potential flooding and water safety hazards.<\/p>\n
Weather forecasts indicate moderate to significant rainfall across the watershed, with total precipitation amounts of approximately 50 to 70 mm expected over the next five days.<\/p>\n
As a result, low to moderate runoff is anticipated in local rivers and streams. Stream flows are currently within normal ranges; however, localized flooding may occur in low-lying areas, including temporary ponding of water on roadways and other poorly drained locations. Flood control channels operated by the SSMRCA are presently functioning within normal operating ranges. Water levels are expected to rise in response to forecast precipitation, thunderstorms, and associated runoff.<\/p>\n
Rivers, streams, and flood control channels may experience faster-moving flows. The SSMRCA will continue to closely monitor watershed conditions, including stream levels and flows, and will provide updates as warranted.<\/p>\n
Residents and visitors are strongly advised to stay well clear of all flood control channels, rivers, and waterways. Elevated water levels, swift currents, and slippery banks can create hazardous conditions. Extra caution should be taken to ensure that children and pets are kept at a safe distance from these areas.<\/p>\n
