Steph Curry reportedly pushing for Gary Payton II’s return, aiming to see him back in a Warriors uniform.

The Golden State Warriors listen when Stephen Curry speaks. The four-time champion has been the foundation of the franchise for more than a decade, shaping its identity both on and off the court. Curry is once again asserting his position, according to NBA Insider Brandon ‘Scoop B’ Robinson. Robinson has been informed by sources that the Warriors superstar has been contacting Gary Payton II directly to request a two-year contract from the front office.

Payton II is a significant addition to Golden State’s roster, representing the hard work, energy, and defensive intensity that fuelled the Warriors’ 2022 championship run. For Curry, his return represents a chance to restore an element that the team has sorely missed.

Payton II’s Impact

After fighting for a roster spot for years, Payton II, who is 31 years old, has earned a unique role in the league. The Warriors’ locker room has a strong connection to his career path, which started with short-term contracts and ended with significant time in the G League.

His perseverance and ability to guard multiple positions helped him become a fan favorite and one of the league’s top perimeter stoppers when he finally made it to Golden State.

The influence of Payton II goes beyond defense. His ability to cut instinctively, finish transitions, and work well with Curry in the halfcourt made the Warriors’ offense harder to predict. Golden State’s ability to create turnovers and quickly turn them into fast-break chances enabled them to change momentum.

The defensive rating of the Warriors improves significantly when Payton is on the floor, as demonstrated by the statistics, according to Statemuse. Despite slowing down last season because of injuries, particularly a persistent core issue, his presence still made a difference in the games. Curry has consistently praised Payton’s energy as a difference-maker, an intangible spark that is not always visible in a box score.

Star Power Backing

Payton’s return is something Curry and others are calling for. Draymond Green’s blessing has already made the push stronger. The front office notices when two of the Warriors’ most influential leaders come together on personnel matters. A Complicated Offseason

The Warriors didn’t have any significant events during their off-season. The silence significantly impacts Jonathan Kuminga’s future. While they are considered an important player, the 21-year-old forward is being evaluated for potential changes to the team. To resolve the Kuminga situation, it is necessary to put the other steps on hold.

The effects have a ripple effect. Al Horford, a veteran big man, has been reported to have verbally committed to joining the Golden State Warriors.

Still, his arrival will depend on the team’s roster maneuvering, including the outcome of the Kuminga talks. Curry’s push for Payton II creates a sense of urgency against this backdrop. Re-signing him is not only a basketball decision, but also a cultural one. Payton is the defensive backbone of the Warriors, balancing their offensive firepower with toughness and resilience.

Curry’s Influence

In the Bay, Curry’s voice has always been a significant force. His seal of approval has frequently topped the scales, from Kevin Durant’s arrival to key role-player signings. This situation is not unique. History suggests that the Warriors will do their utmost to get Payton back if Curry wants it.

The quiet summer of Golden State could soon be erupting with movement as Green reiterates his sentiments, Horford is waiting in the wings, and Kuminga’s future is in doubt. Steph Curry’s message is clear, and one thing is sure for now. Gary Payton II’s return to the Bay is his desire. The Warriors usually respond when Curry speaks.

Landon Buford Landon Buford is a Heavy Sports contributor. I’m a Washington State graduate with a Bachelors degree in Sociology. With the endorsements from Curry and Green, it’s hard to ignore Payton’s return due to Golden State’s expected roster tweaking to stay competitive in a loaded Western Conference.
