{"id":810387,"date":"2026-07-18T16:11:11","date_gmt":"2026-07-18T16:11:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/810387\/"},"modified":"2026-07-18T16:11:11","modified_gmt":"2026-07-18T16:11:11","slug":"open-2026-bryson-dechambeaus-two-shot-penalty-at-royal-birkdale-was-a-clear-cut-decision-says-ra-chief-mark-darbon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/810387\/","title":{"rendered":"Open 2026: Bryson DeChambeau&#8217;s two-shot penalty at Royal Birkdale was a &#8216;clear-cut decision&#8217;, says R&#038;A chief Mark Darbon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">DeChambeau, 32, looked to have lifted himself to one shot off the lead on Friday &#8211; finishing seven under par with a four-under 66 &#8211; but was punished after being deemed to have trampled on long grass close to his ball on the fifth hole.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">There had been some doubt about whether DeChambeau would continue playing at the tournament, but later on Friday he said the decision would &#8220;fire&#8221; him up for the weekend.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The two-time US Open champion, who is now three shots behind Australian overnight leader Lucas Herbert, tees off at 15:30 BST on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Darbon would not be drawn on whether DeChambeau had threatened on Friday night to pull out of the weekend.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;It&#8217;s fair to say there was some emotion around that and we will keep some of the aspects of that discussion private,&#8221; Darbon said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">He added: &#8220;There was some emotion but I empathise with that.
