Vague posting on social media<\/a> this weekend has PlayStation players irate with Sony yet again, this time because of regional pricing changes<\/a> \u201cin selected countries in Latin America and the Middle East\u201d.<\/p>\n

The first trio of nations affected are Mexico, Honduras, and Nicaragua, and they should be noted because they will lose access to the PS3 and PS Vita\u2019s stores<\/a> in August 2026, prior to other countries in July 2027.<\/p>\n

This change is part of that, and it gets underway on 18th August.<\/p>\n

PlayStation will be introducing regional pricing starting August 20\ud83d\ude80<\/p>\n

Regional pricing tends to mean higher pricing, so enjoy your all-digital future\ud83d\ude05<\/p>\n

All three of these countries have shown prices in USD previously, meaning they were subject to exchange rate fluctuations. After a maintenance period concludes, they\u2019ll transition to each country\u2019s own currency.<\/p>\n

This, in theory, could be a positive: no mental arithmetic will be required, players won\u2019t be at the mercy of exchange rates, banks may charge fewer foreign currency exchange fees, and more payment options may be supported.<\/p>\n

But there\u2019s concern it could lead to higher prices overall, depending on how Sony chooses to price each individual item in each country.<\/p>\n

A key detail here is that, as part of the process, it\u2019ll convert all existing wallets to local currencies at a fixed conversion rate.<\/p>\n

Sticking with Mexican pesos, it\u2019ll offer MXN 20.5 for each US$1 in a player\u2019s wallet, which as of today is about ~17% more generous than exchange rates available as I write this.<\/p>\n

That means players will actually get a good conversion on their existing wallets, although obviously exchange rates could change between now and 18th August.<\/p>\n

Until we see the new game prices and the way taxes are incorporated into the final fees, it\u2019s hard to say whether this will be a good move or a bad move for local players.<\/p>\n

Obviously, there\u2019s increased attention on everything PlayStation does right now as a result of its decision to stop making physical games<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But that\u2019s the context as it stands, which hopefully gives you a better overview of what Sony\u2019s doing, rather than the inflammatory posts you may have read on social media.<\/p>\n
