Although the most experienced nurse, she was the least technically qualified, doing the dirty work, breaking bad news to relatives and biting her lip when doctors put her down.

Fricker decided to move on following an episode in which her character was held hostage by a murderer. “Megan didn’t develop in the way she was meant to,” the actor reflected. “She started off with a sense of humour. But she lost it and all she seemed to do was push a trolley round and offer tea and sympathy.”

The departure also coincided with Fricker’s Oscar win as best supporting actress for her portrayal of the battling, devoted mother of Christy Brown (Day-Lewis) in My Left Foot, based on the autobiography of the Irish artist and writer born with cerebral palsy.

Brenda Fricker as the Pigeon Lady in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, 1992. Photograph: Maximum Film/Alamy

It was another example of Fricker bringing compassion to the screen. “Christy’s special magic affects no one as much as his mother, played by Brenda Fricker with a low-key luminosity that’s just lovely,” wrote the American critic Bob Strauss.

A string of Hollywood films followed, including Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992). As the Pigeon Lady, a homeless woman living in Central Park who befriends Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin), Fricker again brought depth and poignancy to the screen, providing a counterpoint to the movie’s slapstick.

In contrast, she supplied comedy in So I Married an Axe Murderer (1993), as the eccentric Scottish mother of Mike Myers’s lead character, obsessed with sensational tabloid stories.

After several years, she left Hollywood behind and concentrated on Canadian, British, Irish and other American films and television programmes. In the film Veronica Guerin (2003), she played the mother of the murdered Irish investigative journalist acted by Cate Blanchett.

Brenda Fricker in Veronica Guerin, 2003. Photograph: Touchstone/Everett/Shutterstock

Over the years, there were several brief returns to Casualty, finally in 2010 with Megan’s diagnosis of terminal cancer. The four-episode story, bringing the issue of assisted dying to a wide audience, saw Fricker reunited with Derek Thompson, who played the staff nurse Charlie Fairhead.

Brenda was born in Dublin to Bina (nee Murphy), a language teacher, and Desmond Fricker, an Irish Times journalist and RTÉ broadcaster. She attended the Ena Mary Burke School of Drama and Elocution from the age of seven and was an Irish dancing national junior champion. Aged nine, she acted in the first of several radio plays for RTÉ.

At 14, while attending Loreto college, St Stephen’s Green, she spent two years in hospital after going through a car windscreen and suffering head injuries in a cycling accident. A year in a sanatorium followed when she contracted TB.

Fricker admitted to suffering from depression throughout her life – and attempting to take her own life more than once. She partly blamed it on being abused by her mother, who, Fricker told the Guardian on the release of her 2025 memoir, She Died Young: A Life in Fragments, would “beat the shit out of me”. Fricker had earlier told the Daily Mirror: “She was bipolar, she was manic depressive and she had nobody to turn to and she took it out on me … My father was the complete opposite. He was the most gentle man you could meet.”

Fricker also revealed in her memoir that she was sexually abused, groomed but “never touched” by an elocution teacher when she was eight; she began self-harming shortly afterwards. Aged 17, she was raped.

Dropping out of University College Dublin in her first year, she became an assistant to the arts editor at her father’s paper. She left once the producer of her radio plays cast her in Irish television’s first soap opera, Tolka Row, when it began in 1964. She played Joan Broderick, the girlfriend of Sean Nolan, acted by Jim Bartley, who was her real-life boyfriend for a while.

Derek Thompson and Brenda Fricker in a scene from a 1986 episode of Casualty. Photograph: Radio Times/Getty Images

On stage, she then performed at the Gate and Abbey theatres in Dublin. In 1969, at Cork Opera House for the premiere of John B Keane’s play Big Maggie, she was Mary Madden, a daughter of the matriarchal title character caught between the values of the old rural Ireland and the modern world.

Two decades later, she returned to the play at the Abbey theatre (1988-89) in the lead role of Maggie Polpin. One critic praised her “subtle portrayal of a woman who can bully her opponents into submission yet is capable of showing moments of tenderness and aching emotional needs”.

An audition with the British TV director Barry Davis took Fricker to England to play the elder daughter in an Irish family for a play in the ITV drama series The Sinners in 1971. They married eight years later.

Fricker appeared on stage at the Royal Court theatre in 1972 and had stints at both the National Theatre (1977-78) and with the Royal Shakespeare Company (1980-81). She then earned plaudits as the Irish immigrant of the title in Typhoid Mary at Bristol’s New Vic theatre (1985-86).

During more than a decade establishing herself as a character actor on television, she appeared in Play for Today productions, acted the overbearing Staff Nurse Maloney, attending the birth of Tracy Langton (now Barlow), in Coronation Street in 1977, and starred as a farmer’s daughter searching for love in The Ballroom of Romance (1982).

After Casualty, Fricker’s TV parts included Sister Agnes, clashing with a novice nun, in Brides of Christ (1991); one of two women married to the same man in the Lynda La Plante drama Seekers (1993); and a villager with a hidden past in an adaptation of Graham Norton’s novel Holding (2022).

Among more than 30 film roles, she played Richard Harris’s wife, unable to forgive his role in their son’s suicide, in The Field (1990); the loyal, no-nonsense secretary of a Mississippi lawyer played by Matthew McConaughey in A Time to Kill (1996); a brothel madam in the western Painted Angels (1997); a hotel chef, alongside Glenn Close, in Albert Nobbs (2011); and the reserved half of a same-sex couple, with Olympia Dukakis, in Cloudburst (2011).

Fricker and Davis divorced in 1989, a year before his death.

Brenda Fricker, actor, born 17 February 1945; died 16 July 2026

Brenda Fricker, who has died aged 81, was only the second Irish actor – and the first female…

[8
49,48,75
post-812310","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-entertainment","tag-ca","tag-canada","tag-entertainment
["GET
