For decades, top-tier Cup Series drivers have chosen to occasionally make appearances in other circuits like the second-tier Xfinity Series or third-tier Craftsman Truck Series to get more repetitions and just out of the pure love of racing. Comparable to an MLB player going down to the minors to sharpen his skills, the appearances often lead to debates among fans and industry members about whether having the sport’s cream of the crop come beat up on younger and less prominent opponents helps the Xfinity and Truck full-timers hone their skills or just leads to boring blowout wins in mismatched competitions.

NASCAR has made several alterations to the rules around the topic over the years, including in 2020 limiting Cup drivers to only five Xfinity Series appearances, down from seven. Cup Series drivers with more than three years of experience remain limited to appearances in five Xfinity races a season and five Truck races. Those appearances must be before the regular-season finale and playoffs in order to ensure that Cup drivers don’t directly impact those championship-deciding events.

But speaking as part of the announcement that O’Reilly Auto Parts will become the new second-tier title sponsor next year, replacing Xfinity, NASCAR President Steve O’Donnell said those rules are now under review. He said, “We’re going to look at who is able to race in the series in the future as well and maybe make some changes down the road, but there’s a lot of opportunities for us to work with The CW and O’Reilly Auto Parts to take it to the next level so you’re operating from a really good base, which is awesome, but I think we’ve got a lot of growth ahead of us. … You look at all of our series and we’ve had limits on, ‘Could a Cup driver compete?’ ‘How many races could they compete?’ So we’ve certainly had discussions with The CW and in the Truck Series as well (about), ‘Does that rule as it stands now make the most sense to continue as it is? Do we tweak it?’ So we’re looking at a lot of things over the offseason and talking to a lot of the teams and drivers.”

NASCAR is considering changing its rules in the coming seasons to allow its premier series drivers to moonlight…

[446
49004,49,48,12716,634,82
0":"post-81233","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-nascar","8":"tag-athlete-performance","9":"tag-ca","10":"tag-canada","11":"tag-motorsports","12":"tag-nascar","13":"tag-sports
["GET
