{"id":813728,"date":"2026-07-20T07:37:11","date_gmt":"2026-07-20T07:37:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/813728\/"},"modified":"2026-07-20T07:37:11","modified_gmt":"2026-07-20T07:37:11","slug":"exciting-finds-uncovered-near-medieval-church-in-albury","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/813728\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Exciting&#8217; finds uncovered near medieval church in Albury"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Archaeologists digging in a village in Surrey to try to find a lost Saxon settlement say some of their discoveries are &#8220;really exciting&#8221;. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The excavations are taking place near a 12th Century church beside the River Tillingbourne at Albury.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">As well as the Saxon settlement, the dig has unearthed objects dating back to Roman and even prehistoric times. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Dr Anne Sassin, community archaeologist, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sounds\/brand\/p0hy6kcq\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Secret Surrey<\/a>: &#8220;What a lot of people don&#8217;t realise is how much exciting buried archaeology there is here.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">She added: &#8220;When you go outside you only see a couple of buildings, the church and the manor house.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;But there previously was possibly an entire medieval village, maybe Saxon in origin.&#8221;  <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Sassin said the site was &#8220;very appealing&#8221; to archaeologists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;It&#8217;s because of all of the hidden lumps and bumps and the landscape, what&#8217;s underneath the surface,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;Even when you look across the river you can see different terraces and field boundaries.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Surrey Archaeological Society has been working since 2023 to learn more about the village that once stood along the banks of the River Tillingbourne.  <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Archaeologists digging in a village in Surrey to try to find a lost Saxon settlement say some of&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":813729,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[194299],"tags":[49,48,87674],"class_list":["post-813728","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-surrey","tag-ca","tag-canada","tag-surrey"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/813728","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=813728"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/813728\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/813729"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=813728"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=813728"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=813728"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
