Kevin\u2019s notes and IDs are indented, and you can enlarge the photos by clicking on them.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The Crowsnest to Osoyoos \u2013 Part 1<\/p>\n<p>Vancouver to Princeton<\/p>\n<p>Each spring I make a pilgrimage from my home in Vancouver to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Osoyoos\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Osoyoos<\/a> in south-central British Columbia. Birds are what drew me there initially, but over the years the ecology and geology have cast a spell on me.<\/p>\n<p>After roughly 2\u00bd hours of driving on the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Crowsnest_Highway\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Crowsnest Highway<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/E._C._Manning_Provincial_Park\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">E.C. Manning Provincial Park<\/a> is my first stop. Located in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/North_Cascades\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">North Cascades<\/a>, the area is densely forested with coniferous trees, and even in late May you can expect to find some patches of snow.<\/p>\n<p>Every year without fail I\u2019m greeted by numerous <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Columbian_ground_squirrel\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Columbian Ground Squirrels (Urocitellus columbianus)<\/a>. They hibernate for up to 8 months of the year, and this population has probably been active for only a few weeks when I visit.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/whyevolutionistrue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/01-ground-squirrels.jpg?ssl=1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-567981\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/01-ground-squirrels.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"783\" height=\"587\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t have to go much further than the parking lot to find flocks of <a href=\"https:\/\/ebird.org\/species\/chispa\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chipping sparrows (Spizella passerina)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/whyevolutionistrue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/02-chipping-sparrow.jpg?ssl=1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-567982\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/02-chipping-sparrow.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"792\" height=\"594\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Venturing further into the park, I almost always find a few <a href=\"https:\/\/ebird.org\/species\/towwar\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Townsend\u2019s Warblers (Setophaga townsendi)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/whyevolutionistrue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/03-townsends-warbler.jpg?ssl=1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-567983\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/03-townsends-warbler.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"783\" height=\"587\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This year I felt especially lucky \u2014 a pair of <a href=\"https:\/\/ebird.org\/species\/attwoo1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">American Three-toed Woodpeckers (Picoides dorsalis)<\/a> appeared out of nowhere just as I was about to leave.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/whyevolutionistrue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/04-american-three-toed-woodpecker.jpg?ssl=1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-567984\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/04-american-three-toed-woodpecker.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"780\" height=\"585\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Princeton,_British_Columbia\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Princeton<\/a> is my next stop, and where the transition from the forests to semi-arid climate begins to become apparent. According to Wikipedia, \u201cPrinceton is one of the sunniest places in British Columbia with 2,088 hours of sunshine annually\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>My destination is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fws.gov\/refuge\/swan-lake\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Swan Lake Wildlife Refuge<\/a>, located just north of the city that is always replete with swallows, waterfowl, and many other surprises.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/ebird.org\/species\/comrav\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Common Raven (Corvus corax)<\/a> keeping watch from a fence post.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/whyevolutionistrue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/05-common-raven.jpg?ssl=1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-567985\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/05-common-raven.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"765\" height=\"574\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_World_sparrow\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New World Sparrows (Family Passerellidae)<\/a> don\u2019t get a lot of love and it\u2019s not uncommon to hear them derided as LBJs (Little Brown Jobs). I think many birders do themselves a disservice by not paying attention to sparrows and other \u2018common\u2019 birds. Here\u2019s a beautiful <a href=\"https:\/\/ebird.org\/species\/vesspa\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Vesper Sparrow (Pooecetes gramineus)<\/a> posing on a branch.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/whyevolutionistrue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/06-vesper-sparrow.jpg?ssl=1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-567986\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/06-vesper-sparrow.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"745\" height=\"559\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ebird.org\/species\/amekes\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">American Kestral (Falco sparverius)<\/a> are the smallest and most widespread North American falcon with distinctive <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sexual_dimorphism\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sexual dimorphism<\/a>. This male was waiting out a sudden rain shower:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/whyevolutionistrue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/07-american-kestral.jpg?ssl=1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-567987\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/07-american-kestral.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"743\" height=\"557\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Another photo of the <a href=\"https:\/\/ebird.org\/species\/amekes\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">American Kestral (Falco sparverius)<\/a> being scolded by a <a href=\"https:\/\/ebird.org\/species\/wesmea\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Western Meadowlark (Sturnella neglecta)<\/a> who was very unhappy with his presence:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/whyevolutionistrue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/08-american-kestral-and-western-meadowlark.jpg?ssl=1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-567989\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/08-american-kestral-and-western-meadowlark.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"740\" height=\"555\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The bluest of bluebirds \u2014 this male <a href=\"https:\/\/ebird.org\/species\/moublu\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mountain Bluebird (Sialia currucoides)<\/a> was quite shy, but let me get a decent photograph before it fled my primate curiosity.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/whyevolutionistrue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/09-mountani-bluebird.jpg?ssl=1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-567991\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/09-mountani-bluebird.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"739\" height=\"554\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A mediocre photo of a <a href=\"https:\/\/ebird.org\/species\/lewwoo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lewis\u2019s Woodpecker (Melanerpes lewis)<\/a> \u2014 a large, oddball woodpecker which is still somewhat enigmatic.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/whyevolutionistrue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/10-lewiss-woodpecker.jpg?ssl=1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-567992\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/10-lewiss-woodpecker.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"739\" height=\"554\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On the route to Osoyoos, I pass through the small town of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hedley,_British_Columbia\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hedley<\/a>, once the site of a gold mine (confusingly named the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nickel_Plate_Mine\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nickel Plate Mine<\/a>).
