John Chayka wasted little time making his mark on the Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a>. Just 10 days after being hired as general manager on May 3, 2026, he dismissed head coach Craig Berube <\/a>and launched what he described as an extensive coaching search. After interviewing more than 25 candidates, Chayka surprised many observers by hiring former Los Angeles Kings head coach<\/a>\u2014and former Maple Leafs assistant coach\u2014Jim Hiller.<\/p>\n

Hiller\u2019s r\u00e9sum\u00e9 is relatively short by NHL coaching standards. Promoted to head coach of the Kings on Feb. 2, 2024, he guided Los Angeles to a 93-58-24<\/a> regular-season record over parts of two seasons, posting a .600 winning percentage. He also reached 50 career wins in just 87 games, the fastest mark in Kings franchise history, surpassing Darryl Sutter<\/a>\u2018s previous record of 93 games.<\/p>\n

The postseason, however, told a different story. In both 2024 and 2025, Hiller\u2019s Kings were eliminated in the opening round by the Edmonton Oilers. While his regular-season results were impressive, playoff success remained elusive\u2014a storyline Maple Leafs fans know all too well.<\/p>\n

So why did Chayka decide Hiller was the right coach?<\/p>\n

Hiller Is More Than Another Defensive Coach<\/p>\n

At first glance, the hiring seems somewhat puzzling. Berube was often criticized for implementing a defence-first system that many believed limited the offensive creativity of elite talents such as Auston Matthews<\/a> and William Nylander. Hiller\u2019s teams in Los Angeles were also built around a strong defensive structure, making it easy to wonder whether the Maple Leafs simply replaced one defence-minded coach with another.<\/p>\n

The difference may not be in the systems they employ, but in how those systems are built. Berube rarely spoke positively about analytics. When he did mention them, it was usually to emphasize that they were only one part of the decision-making process. More often than not, they weren\u2019t mentioned at all. His coaching style appeared to rely primarily on traditional evaluation.<\/p>\n

Hiller approaches the game differently. He has described analytics as a tool that allows coaches to \u201ctest, back-test, and maybe think about a better discussion.\u201d Rather than replacing experience, he sees data as something that helps coaches ask better questions and make better decisions. That philosophy closely mirrors Chayka\u2019s own approach.<\/p>\n

The Chayka-Hiller Connection<\/p>\n

When introducing Hiller, Chayka repeatedly emphasized that the new coach\u2019s vision, daily habits, and organizational standards aligned perfectly with the direction he wanted to take the franchise. Both men share an analytical mindset, and Chayka believes that a common foundation will create seamless communication between the front office and the coaching staff.<\/p>\n

Hiller also presented what Chayka called a detailed plan for maximizing the current roster. Combined with his previous experience in Toronto and his understanding of the unique pressures that come with coaching the Maple Leafs, Hiller became the clear choice. <\/p>\n

One theme Hiller repeatedly returned to during his introductory press conference was \u201cteam spirit.\u201d He described a coach\u2019s biggest responsibility as fostering team spirit while creating an environment where players enjoy coming to the rink and compete relentlessly every night.<\/p>\n

Exactly how that philosophy translates onto the ice remains to be seen. What stood out more to us, however, wasn\u2019t necessarily Hiller\u2019s explanation of team spirit\u2014it was the obvious alignment between coach and general manager. For the first time in quite a while, it appears the Maple Leafs have a coach who shares the general manager\u2019s vision from the very beginning.<\/p>\n

Our First Impression of Hiller as the Maple Leafs Coach<\/p>\n

Our first impression isn\u2019t that Hiller is guaranteed to be a better coach than Berube. That simply can\u2019t be judged before a game has been played. Instead, our first impression is that Chayka hired the coach he wanted\u2014not simply the best coach available.<\/p>\n

We expect Chayka to be a hands-on general manager. Rather than operating from a distance, we believe he will work closely with Hiller and the coaching staff to ensure the team\u2019s identity reflects the philosophy he has established for the organization. That kind of partnership only works when both men see the game the same way.<\/p>\n

Whether that approach ultimately leads to playoff success is impossible to say today. What we do believe is that the Maple Leafs now have a front office and a coaching staff pulling in exactly the same direction. For a team beginning a new era under Chayka, that may prove to be the most important first impression of all. <\/p>\n
