Ontario’s integrity commissioner is reviewing allegations that a Brampton MPP used taxpayer dollars to purchase ads in a newspaper run by an immediate family member.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Global News reported on Monday<\/a> that Progressive Conservative MPP Hardeep Grewal of Brampton East is facing accusations of using public funds to purchase advertising in a newspaper allegedly run by his father.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The allegations come as the PC party faces scrutiny after several MPPs were discovered to have expensed thousands of dollars in Toronto hotel stays over the past three years \u2014 that includes Grewal, who spent over $27,000 despite living in Brampton.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Ontario NDP Leader Marit Stiles said she filed a complaint to the integrity commissioner on Monday, requesting a review into Grewal’s “clear pattern” of placing ads in the paper.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Residents deserve to know if Grewal’s family members are “benefiting from tax dollars,” said Stiles. She also called into question the “tone” Premier Doug Ford has set for his caucus.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“Clearly, MPPs who have spent tens of thousands of tax dollars to fund their lavish lifestyle continue to have his confidence, but what else can you expect from a premier who tried to buy himself a private jet on the people’s dime?” she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Grewal said in a statement Monday that the newspaper, the Punjabi Post, “is a popular ethnic news outlet in Brampton” that several political parties have advertised in.<\/p>\n

“Prior to advertising, I should have consulted with the integrity commissioner and have since reached out to her office for advice,” he said.<\/p>\n

Juliet Kadzviti, spokesperson for the Office of the Integrity Commissioner of Ontario, said there were no additional details while the matter is under review.\u00a0<\/p>\n

On Friday, MPP Stan Cho of Willowdale resigned<\/a> from cabinet after he came under fire for expensing $16,000 in Toronto hotel stays whilst living in the city.\u00a0<\/p>\n
