\n\tAnother Future<\/a> album, another No. 1 on the Billboard 200<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\tLike 11 previous sets released by the superstar rapper \u2014\u00a0including all seven of his prior official non-collaboration albums \u2014\u00a0The Real Me, released on July 10, debuts at No. 1 on this week\u2019s chart (dated July 25). The set bows with 131,000 first-week units, while also charting 17 songs on the Billboard Hot 100<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\tThose numbers are down a little from Future\u2019s last unaccompanied solo album, however, as 2022\u2019s I Never Liked You debuted with 222,000 units. That set also littered the Hot 100, with eight of its tracks entered in the top 20 \u2014 while the top-ranking Real Me cut on this week\u2019s chart is \u201cCalifornia Girls\u201d at No. 23. <\/p>\n

\n\t1.\u00a0The Real\u00a0Me\u00a0debuts atop the Billboard 200 this week with 131,000 first-week album units. Is that number lower, higher, or about what you would have expected?\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tKyle Denis: Considering the muted reception of \u201cRadio\u201d and the lack of any real conversation or hype leading up to the album release, 131,000\u00a0first-week\u00a0units is about what I would have expected for\u00a0The Real Me.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tAngel Diaz: I guess\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0right around where I expected it to be.\u00a0He also\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0have much to compete with and had a\u00a0pretty clear\u00a0runway to snag his\u00a012th\u00a0No. 1 album.\u00a0The Real Me\u00a0essentially did\u00a0the same first week numbers<\/a>\u00a0as\u00a0Mixtape Pluto.<\/p>\n

\n\tCarl Lamarre: Maybe slightly lower, but I\u2019m not totally surprised. I probably would\u2019ve guessed somewhere in the ballpark of 150,000\u2013160,000 units based on name recognition alone. But I think we\u00a0have to remember that the build-up for Future wasn\u2019t as robust as in years past. With\u00a0We Don\u2019t Trust You, fans gravitated toward the magnetism of him and Metro Boomin teaming up, while \u201cLike That\u201d became an explosive Hot 100 chart-topper thanks to Kendrick Lamar\u2019s verse. Before that,\u00a0I Never Liked You\u00a0was powered by \u201cWait For U\u201d with Drake and Tems.\u00a0The Real Me\u00a0leaned more into mystery, and while \u201cRadio\u201d was a solid record, it wasn\u2019t enough to generate the same level of buzz. The lack of features this time around also certainly played a role in the drop in numbers.<\/p>\n

\n\tMichael Saponara: Even though it\u2019s Future\u2019s first album in about two years, I felt like his first-week sales total is only a smidge lower than expected. Without a potent lead single and keeping the project guest-free, I looked for\u00a0The Real Me\u00a0to mirror a sum closer to\u00a0Mixtape Pluto\u2019s 129,000 units than\u00a0We Don\u2019t Trust You\u2019s 251,000.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tAndrew Unterberger: It\u2019s a little low. Six figures for a hip-hop album without a physical release is still pretty solid in 2026, but Future\u2019s always been able to create genuine heat with his new official LP releases until this point \u2014\u00a0I\u2019m not sure I\u2019m feeling that with this one, either in the numbers or just through anecdotal observation. <\/p>\n

\n\t2. Both Future\u2019s most recent unaccompanied album, 2022\u2019s\u00a0I Never Liked You, and the first of his two 2024 team-up albums with Metro Boomin,\u00a0We\u00a0Don\u2019t\u00a0Trust You, moved comfortably over 200,000 units in their first week. What do you think is the biggest reason for the\u00a0drop in\u00a0units for\u00a0The Real Me\u2019s debut frame?\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tKyle Denis: I Never Liked You\u00a0had the post-Valentine\u2019s Day glow of lead single \u201cWorst Day\u201d and an immediate smash hit in \u201cWait For U\u201d (with Drake & Tems), while\u00a0We Don\u2019t Trust You\u00a0arrived at the beginning of the biggest rap beef in a quarter-century, complete with its own smash hit in the Kendrick Lamar-assisted \u201cLike That.\u201d Simply put,\u00a0The Real Me\u00a0had none of that \u2014 it was\u00a0always going to be a challenge for an album with no narrative and no hits (yet?)\u00a0to\u00a0match those two.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tAngel Diaz: There wasn\u2019t really a lead up single going into the release and I think some folks just might have Future fatigue.\u00a0You also\u00a0have to\u00a0factor in the hype that\u00a0the\u00a0first Metro\u00a0tape\u00a0had,\u00a0and then\u00a0you\u00a0have to\u00a0factor in\u00a0the fever\u00a0pitch\u00a0the second one reached after\u00a0the noise the\u00a0previous\u00a0release made. I think\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0a bit unfair to compare that project (I view it as a double disc)\u00a0to this.<\/p>\n

\n\tCarl Lamarre: The storyline just wasn\u2019t quite there for Pluto this go-round. Without a compelling narrative like\u00a0We Don\u2019t Trust You\u00a0or a blockbuster single on the level of \u201cWait For U,\u201d there simply wasn\u2019t the same anticipation surrounding this album cycle. Aside from a few tweets and social posts, Future never really sold fans on the premise of\u00a0The Real Me,\u00a0or why this was an album that demanded their full attention.<\/p>\n

\n\tMichael Saponara: Adding onto my answer from the first question, I\u2019d lean on there not being a better lead single to add anticipation for the project, along with the album being a solo endeavor without any of his A-list friends making appearances.\u00a0We Don\u2019t Trust You\u00a0was heavily anticipated as a full project, building on his established rapport with Metro Boomin and inviting titans to the party like Kendrick Lamar and The Weeknd.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tAndrew Unterberger: I think we\u2019re just in different times for hip-hop now than we were in 2022, and maybe even in 2024 \u2014\u00a0without a major narrative hook or proven hit to anchor a project, long-established stars can\u2019t walk into automatically dominant first weeks the way they used to. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n\t3. \u201cCalifornia Girls\u201d is the\u00a0highest-charting\u00a0of Future\u2019s 18 entries on the Hot 100 this week, bowing at No. 23. Does it seem like a\u00a0lasting\u00a0hit to you? If not, do you think\u00a0there\u2019s\u00a0another one to be found elsewhere on the album?\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tKyle Denis: I\u2026 do not remember what \u201cCalifornia Girls\u201d sounds like. But I do recall \u201cTank Top Pluto,\u201d \u201cBuild\u00a0A B-ch,\u201d \u201c2018\u201d and \u201cHollywood,\u201d and I think at least\u00a0one\u00a0of those four will be the album\u2019s true lasting hit.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tAngel Diaz: I think\u00a0we\u2019ll\u00a0be hearing about \u201cCalifornia Girls\u201d for the rest of the summer. It has all the makings of a Future Hot 100 hit.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0catchy and\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0already making an impact on social media. \u201cKonnichiwa,\u201d\u00a0\u201cHollywood\u201d\u00a0and \u201cAlice\u201d are the sleepers, though. All three of those are\u00a0a viral\u00a0video and commercial\u00a0placement\u00a0away from being\u00a0certified\u00a0hits.\u00a0\u201cF\u2014k\u00a0an\u00a0Interview\u201d and\u00a0\u201c2018\u201d\u00a0have been my personal favorites, so far.<\/p>\n

\n\tCarl Lamarre: This is personally one of my favorites because it taps into the\u00a0HNDRXX\u00a0fabric. Future\u2019s dreamy exploits and lustful intentions have often been a winning formula. It\u2019s toxic, sure, but it also feels tailor-made for Instagram baddies looking for the soundtrack to their summer mischief. If you\u2019re looking for something a little more turnt up, though, \u201cTank Top Pluto\u201d is a distant second and has serious heat-rock potential.<\/p>\n

\n\tMichael Saponara: It doesn\u2019t seem like there will be a long-lasting hit from\u00a0The Real Me\u00a0sticking around the top 40 for months down the road. Future flooding the Hot 100 with 17 entries (18 if you count his feature appearance on Drake\u2019s \u201cRan to Atlanta\u201d) is par for the course with A-list acts landing most, if not all of their albums onto the chart the week after its arrival.<\/p>\n

\n\tAndrew Unterberger: I wouldn\u2019t bet on \u201cCalifornia Girls\u201d or any other song having an extended chart impact. Look at Spotify\u2019s Daily Top Songs USA chart right now<\/a> and you won\u2019t find a Future song in the entire top 200. Look at Apple Music\u2019s real-time chart and the highest-ranking song is \u201cWait for U\u201d from I Never Liked You. Never say never with something belatedly striking viral gold, but right now, it doesn\u2019t look like anything from Real Me is really catching. <\/p>\n

\n\t4. The title of Future\u2019s latest seems to promise more of an authentic look into his true personality or character \u2014 do you feel like\u00a0The Real Me\u00a0actually\u00a0delivers on\u00a0that in any meaningful way?\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tKyle Denis: I think\u00a0The Real Me\u00a0delivers the same\u00a0somewhat obfuscated\u00a0glimpse into the man behind the lean-steeped myth that any \u201cpersonal\u201d Future album does.\u00a0I certainly\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0walk away from these 22 tracks feeling as if\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0just\u00a0encountered\u00a0a version of Pluto that he\u2019s never before presented on record.<\/p>\n

\n\tAngel Diaz: I hit play and got what I expected to get, so maybe\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0what he meant to say by naming it The Real Me?\u00a0I definitely was expecting\u00a0something\u00a0more like\u00a0HNDRXX in terms of introspection.\u00a0The track \u201cIf I Could\u201d has some of the honesty that we\u00a0probably should\u2019ve gotten\u00a0more\u00a0of\u00a0on\u00a0this project.\u00a0Like most albums these days, I think it\u00a0would\u2019ve\u00a0benefited\u00a0by\u00a0being a bit shorter.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tCarl Lamarre: There are pieces of candor sprinkled throughout the 22-track set. I thought \u201cF\u2013k an Interview,\u201d \u201cRadio,\u201d \u201cBig Moment,\u201d and \u201cIf I Could\u201d were the most revealing, with the latter being especially eye-opening. On that track, he admits it\u2019s difficult for him to open up to his family while also expressing his desire for his sons to become better men than he is. Those bite-sized ruminations serve as compelling therapy sessions for Pluto, and give listeners a rare moment to pause and reflect.<\/p>\n

\n\tMichael Saponara: There was more of the same from Future in this regard, and it felt like a missed opportunity for Pluto to pull back the curtain on one of rap\u2019s mythological figures and trap deities of the last 15 years. In usual Future fashion, he gives a peek into his opulent lifestyle, exotic romance and hedonistic endeavors. However, one moment stood out as Future grappled with his toxic king title on \u201cSnow in Skyami.\u201d \u201cTryna stay away from that toxic s\u2013t, but I can\u2019t deny it,\u201d he admits.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tAndrew Unterberger: There are some revealing moments, particularly on the twinkling, reflective \u201cIf I Could,\u201d which Billboard rightly dubbed<\/a> the album\u2019s best track. But in general, nah. Future albums are always at least partly revealing, in ways both purposeful and less so, but this one no more so than the others. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n\t5. Even with the decreased performance in terms of overall units, Future still scores\u00a0a fairly easy\u00a0No. 1 on the Billboard 200 this week \u2014 his eighth consecutive official unaccompanied solo album to reach the top spot, and 12th overall. Do you see that streak of official album No. 1s continuing to double digits, or do you think the lower-unit total spells trouble for Future there?\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tKyle Denis: I think as long as he times his releases right \u2014 and calls up\u00a0some\u00a0homies for a few guest appearance alley-oops \u2014 he\u2019ll be just fine.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0no\u00a0easy feat to pull a six-figure opening week in general, so for him to do so\u00a0fairly easily\u00a0with a record that was\u00a0practically DOA\u00a0is only a good thing.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tAngel Diaz: I\u00a0think\u00a0he can go No. 1 again with a strong single and some more time between this project and the next one.\u00a0He\u2019s\u00a0a legacy artist\u00a0now,\u00a0and\u00a0he\u2019ll\u00a0contend for a top spot solely off\u00a0curiosity. I\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0think he has an album\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0stayed at No. 1 for more than a week.<\/p>\n

\n\tCarl Lamarre: I do think Future can eventually reach the historic mark of 15 No. 1 albums, and for a few reasons. First, I believe he has at least one more blockbuster collaborative project left in him. Whether he goes for a trilogy with Metro Boomin or finally delivers a\u00a0What a Time to Be Alive\u00a0sequel with Drake, my gut tells me there\u2019s another joint project that could easily produce another chart-topper. The bigger question is whether Future can prove he\u2019s still a reliable solo hitmaker at this stage of his career. The last truly enduring solo Hot 100 success from Pluto was \u201cPuffin on Zootiez,\u201d and that was more than four years ago. If he can recalibrate and reclaim some of the hitmaking magic that defined his prime, I think he\u2019ll be just fine.<\/p>\n

\n\tMichael Saponara: No, with Future being one of rap\u2019s pillars of the 2010s, the status and relevance will always be there for him to net a six-figure first-week sales total. If he continues with the same packaging as\u00a0Mixtape Pluto\u00a0or\u00a0The Real Me, Future and Epic Records will have to be more selective with release dates to keep the streak going. Changes like having a hit single fueling the album rollout and inviting his friends for a star-studded affair should have him producing closer to that 200,000 sales mark he\u2019s proven to be capable of in the past.<\/p>\n

\n\tAndrew Unterberger: It\u2019d certainly be premature to proclaim any kind of demise for Future\u2019s days as a true star-level hitmaker \u2014 he\u2019s still a legend, and the fact that he can still walk into six figures in his debut week even with an album that doesn\u2019t appear to be resonating like some past sets is telling. But the No. 1s may start to feel a little less automatic in the coming years, particularly if he has to deal with some stiffer release-week competition, and particularly if he continues to drop his albums with little build or rollout leading up to them.<\/p>\n
