{"id":817409,"date":"2026-07-21T23:55:10","date_gmt":"2026-07-21T23:55:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/817409\/"},"modified":"2026-07-21T23:55:10","modified_gmt":"2026-07-21T23:55:10","slug":"winnipeg-video-game-stores-petition-against-sony-going-viral","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/817409\/","title":{"rendered":"Winnipeg video game store&#8217;s petition against Sony going viral"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A local Winnipeg video game store is going toe-to-toe with Sony after launching a petition fighting back against the company\u2019s decision to discontinue physical discs starting January 2028.<\/p>\n<p>On July 1, Sony announced that all PlayStation games will be released digitally, citing the industry\u2019s shift away from physical media.<\/p>\n<p>PNP Games felt that somebody needed to step up. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.change.org\/p\/don-t-kill-the-disc-tell-sony-to-keep-physical-playstation-games\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Their petition<\/a> has garnered support worldwide, with now over 335,000 signatures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s bigger than we could have ever thought it would be; it\u2019s just huge,\u201d said Dan Boissoneault, the business &amp; community developer at PNP Games.<\/p>\n<p>Boissoneault has been working in the gaming industry for 30 years. He\u2019s frustrated with Sony and believes their decision could be a big mistake, especially for future generations. He says there\u2019s no avenue to pass things on, and if you have a digital licence for a game, you don\u2019t own it.<\/p>\n<p>He says without physically owning a game, at any moment Sony could decide to remove the game from a server, even if you\u2019ve already paid for it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo be able to just say, \u2018Oh sorry, that\u2019s not yours anymore. Nobody can have it anymore,\u2019 could be a huge loss,\u201d Boissoneault explained.<\/p>\n<p>Boissoneault said that they haven\u2019t heard anything from Sony in response to the petition, and when CityNews reached out to the company for a comment, we did not hear back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour best customers want to see physical games. They want to see physical media. We know you\u2019re one of the companies that has the hugest history in making physical products.
