When Tides Turn is the name of a new game studio started by Fiona Sperry in order to launch Wreckreation 2<\/a>, a sequel to the “open-world driving playground” that had more than its fair share of Burnout energy. Wreckreation 2 will be an open-world arcade racing game that hopes to capture that frenetic moment-to-moment energy that Sperry believes are unique to the arcade racing genre. The new studio is taking something of a different approach to game development, with Sperry stating that the studio aims to develop Wreckreation 2 “out in the open”.Fiona SperryRather than disappearing for years and emerging with a finished game, we’re going to develop in the open\u2014sharing our progress, listening to the community, and letting players help shape what comes next.\"\"\/<\/a> In her post announcing the new studio, Sperry recounts a conversation she had in which a Discord moderator reminded her that people are still out there playing old Burnout games.A few months ago, one of our Discord moderators was talking to me about Burnout. He remembered all sorts of tiny details, and I laughed and said, “My God, you’ve got a much better memory than me.”<\/p>\n

He replied:<\/p>\n

“Fiona, we haven’t got a better memory. We’re just still playing them.”

\nThat really stayed with me.<\/p>\n

She cites this as one of the driving factors behind starting When Tides Turn, which should be exciting news for Burnout fans. <\/p>\n

Wreckreation 2 as not got a launch date attached just yet, but there is an announcement trailer that shows off some of the carnage of the upcoming game. The trailer has a number of Burnout-coded moments, like the slow-mo crashes, back-and-forth battles for dominance, and even police chases. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\nWreckreation’s Steam Store page<\/a> already has a Patreon dev livestream archive linked to show some of the “out in the open” development Sperry mentioned in her studio launch announcement, and the Steam page lists features like online multiplayer and cross-platform multiplayer, suggesting that Wreckreation 2 will likely launch on PlayStation and Xbox, too. There are also a number of game modes hinted at on the Steam page, including Race, Road Rage, Marked Man, Pursuits, Blackspots, Wreckonings, and Eliminators, although it’s still early days, so those game modes may come and go <\/p>\n

Fiona Sperry was Studio Director at Criterion games from 2004 to 2014, during which time the studio published some of its most iconic racing games, including Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, and Burnout 3: Takedown.
