The best-run franchises find the perfect junctures at which they blend ascending talent under long-term team control with veteran contributors. That’s what we saw from the 2025-26 Carolina Hurricanes. They had rising early-20s stars such as Seth Jarvis, Logan Stankoven and Jackson Blake; prime-year horses like Sebastian Aho, Andrei Svechnikov and K’Andre Miller; and veteran stalwarts like Jaccob Slavin, Nikolaj Ehlers, Jordan Staal and Taylor Hall. Not only was their Stanley Cup window wide open at the ideal time, but it has been for several seasons and will be for many more, given so much of the roster remains under contract long term.

Which other teams find themselves in that sweet spot of their contention trajectory? Which teams have missed their windows? Which are about to open it? And which need serious renovations to even think about winning again?

Welcome back to Stanley Cup Windows, my annual series in which I plot all 32 franchises on a contention timeline. We began with the Atlantic Division and Central Division last week and continued with the Metropolitan Division earlier this week, and we end with the messy Pacific Division, which is the NHL’s weakest but nevertheless boasts some Cup contenders. Some are barely clinging to that status, while others are slowly growing into it.

Contract information courtesy of our partners at PuckPedia.

WIN-NOW WINDOW

Not only does Connor McDavid’s two-year contract commence this year, but he’ll be eligible for an extension beginning July 1, 2027, when all the speculation over his future will ignite again. How desperate are the Oilers to win while they still have McDavid and Leon Drasiaitl in their primes? They hired Mike Babcock as their head coach, that’s how. The players signed off on the move, feeling they needed to pivot from the calm, calculated Kris Knoblauch to a firebreather behind the bench. Whether the gambit works or not, we can at least say (for a change) that GM Stan Bowman has had a strong offseason. He jettisoned blueliner Darnell Nurse’s contract without retaining money; re-signed center Jason Dickinson and D-man Connor Murphy at prices that looked great once the July 1 contract AAVs started trickling in league wide; added a solid young puck-moving blueliner in Ryan Shea; and overhauled the Oilers’ goaltending, adding Frederik Andersen as a No. 1 above Tristan Jarry and Devon Levi as a No. 3 with future starter potential. The Oilers are better after their reload, but are they good enough to make a Stanley Cup run? They’re still not the deepest team at forward, though a full breakout from Matt Savoie after his promising 2025-26 could change things.

The Golden Knights are the permanent win-now poster children, the NHL’s most ruthless organization, the punters of first-round picks and prospects. But they’ve been…kinda quiet so far this summer by their standard? They lost top goal-scorer Pavel Dorofeyev as a cap-casualty, trading him to the New York Rangers, and re-signed defenseman Rasmus Andersson, but the Golden Knights haven’t made any other real headline-making moves. Are they laying low before taking a swing at Dylan Larkin or Connor Hellebuyck? We’ll see. Either way, the Golden Knights are fresh off a division title and Stanley Cup Final appearance. They remain the team to beat in the Pacific, but they’re hardly a lock to win it again after losing a lot of offense so far this offseason.

WINDOW OPENING

After making the playoffs for the first time since 2017-18 and seeing young stars Leo Carlsson (21), Cutter Gauthier (22), Jackson LaCombe (25) and Beckett Sennecke (20) emerge, the Ducks even won a round, so you’d think they’d land in the ‘Window Wide Open’ category. But GM Pat Verbeek’s offseason hasn’t been pretty. He bought high on an obvious outlier season from grinder A.J. Greer and watched the whole right side of Anaheim’s blueline leave in free agency, with John Carlson, Jacob Trouba and Radko Gudas gone (Gudas technically in a trade for Greer’s rights). Then Verbeek got bamboozled with an offer sheet from the Philadelphia Flyers that forced him to match and pay Carlsson $18 million annually, quite a bit more than his current value, putting the team in an awkward spot with fellow RFA Gauthier. Overall, this Ducks team has a weaker defense than last year’s and didn’t get to add much due to the cap and offer sheet situations diverting Verbeek’s attention. That means Anaheim might not progress further than last season’s result, though the continued ascension of its young stars should offset things and keep them competitive overall.

The Sharks’ arrow was already pointing upward after 2025-26 when their point total rocketed from 52 to 86 as Macklin Celebrini exploded into true superstardom in his 115-point sophomore campaign. Then they snagged Ivar Stenberg second overall after winning that slot in the 2026 NHL Draft Lottery and, after trading William Eklund, secured defensemen Keaton Verhoeff (via the Eklund deal) and Ryan Lin with additional first-rounders. Wow. Also factoring in that forwards Will Smith and Michael Misa and defenseman Sam Dickinson will keep progressing, the future looks blindingly bright in the Bay Area. That said: trading for Nurse and signing Jacob Trouba and paying those two veteran bruisers $17.5 million combined might backfire on GM Mike Grier, as he arguably made his team defense worse installing those two while saying goodbye to UFAs Mario Ferraro and Vincent Desharnais. Still, the youth movement should continue to improve, while Mason Marchment was a solid middle-six forward signing, so the Sharks should rise to the playoff bubble and could even compete for first in the division going forward. They’ll just have to win a lot of games 6-4.

WINDOW SMASHED

No playoff series victories since 2014. A barren prospect pool. And, after signing Corey Perry, Erik Haula and Mats Zuccarello, the Kings are now the oldest team in the NHL. A full season of Artemi Panarin and Kevin Fiala’s return from a broken leg could help the Kings’ offense look half decent, while center Quinton Byfield and defenseman Brandt Clarke, both 23, are poised for breakout seasons now that they’re unimpeded atop the depth chart. But the Kings might have the tightest distance between floor and ceiling of any team in the NHL. They’re very clearly an 85-point team at minimum yet look highly unlikely to get 100. That’s a depressing place to be. The Kings look exactly how they look every year: like a team that’ll get nudged aside easily in Round 1 of the playoffs.

The Kraken hold the “pull my hair out and yell, ‘WHY?’ ” championship belt. Nothing this franchise does makes any sense to me. Seattle was going nowhere at the Trade Deadline yet tried to act as a buyer, trading for Bobby McMann and holding onto expiring assets like Eeli Tolvanen, Jaden Schwartz and Jamie Oleksiak – and getting nothing for them. Schwartz and Oleksiak signed elsewhere as a UFAs, while Tolvanen remains on the market. This summer, the Kraken prioritized re-signing McMann, 30, while preparing to trade Shane Wright, 23. Refusing to quit their strategy of loading up on middle-six forwards and middle-pair defensemen, the Kraken are never bad enough to rock their foundation. They’ve picked 20th, eighth, eighth and seventh overall in their past four drafts. They have yet to secure an absolute surefire star to build around, though 2026 selection Chase Reid may finally change that someday. The Kraken epitomize mediocrity, lacking an elite player at any position, and re-signing McMann, after extending Jordan Eberle last year, suggests they truly don’t understand how to win in this league. They’re chasing quick-fix, fringe-tier competitiveness rather than constructing a sustainable winner.

WINDOW UNDER CONSTRUCTION

Craig Conroy might be the league’s most patient GM. His list of veteran selloffs continues to grow. Since 2023: Tyler Toffoli, Nikita Zadorov, Elias Lindholm, Noah Hanifin, Jacob Markstrom, Chris Tanev, Rasmus Andersson, MacKenzie Weegar, Nazem Kadri, Blake Coleman and more. While lottery luck hasn’t been the Flames’ friend, they’ve still made six first-round picks in the past three drafts. Per DFO prospect analyst Steven Ellis, the Flames have built a pretty deep and balanced prospect pool and, with Carson Carels added to a depth chart that includes Zayne Parekh and freshly acquired Simon Nemec Calgary’s long-term blueline is promising. Still, judging by how conservative Conroy’s additions have been aside from Nemec this summer, it’s clear Calgary doesn’t plan on pushing for the playoffs yet. You could make the case the Flames are deliberately trying to bottom out one more year. Don’t believe me? Look at that projected 2026-27 lineup. Woof. It’s practically begging for more ping-pong balls.

The previous regime was loath to use the term “rebuild,” but we can confidently say the Canucks are blowing it the hell up now. They traded their franchise player, Quinn Hughes, for a futures-oriented package last December. They traded veterans Conor Garland and Tyler Myers before the deadline this past winter. They installed new co-presidents of hockey operations in Henrik and Daniel Sedin, a new GM in Ryan Johnson and a new head coach in Manny Malhotra this offseason. They secured a new potential cornerstone with the third pick in the 2026 Draft, picking the coach’s son in Caleb Malhotra. They dealt veteran defenseman Marcus Pettersson this summer. The Canucks still have plenty of veteran holdovers whose futures they must decide, from forwards Brock Boeser and Elias Pettersson to goaltender Thatcher Demko, so the franchise remains relatively early in the rebuild process, having not stripped the roster to the studs yet. They’re like the Flames a year or two ago.

_____

THE OFFSEASON SOCIAL CLUB HAS ARRIVED

The new era of Nation Gear starts here.

Introducing the Nation Gear x Levelwear Offseason Social Club Collection — a limited edition collection built for the fans who know the sports lifestyle doesn’t stop.

Designed for golf rounds, patio hangs, weekend trips, and every plan in between, this collection blends premium performance with everyday leisure.
