KALISTA GROSECLOSE \/ LIVEWIRE CALGARY<\/p>\n<p>What it means to design for dementia<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After speaking with Alzheimer\u2019s and dementia researchers, the team formulated a landscape catering to the needs of the community and people with dementia related diseases.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The park utilizes sensory experiences, such as natural elements, to foster connection through the human senses. Some include the sweet fragrance of garden flowers, the cozy feeling of sunlight, and the excited laughs of kids on the playground.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For accessibility, the park has paved walkways, colour-coordinated handrails, and directional signage. These measures aim to provide a greater sense of autonomy for dementia patients. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With growing dementia rates, an <a href=\"https:\/\/open.alberta.ca\/dataset\/3eeadcaf-ff0b-4b7d-a035-90a8b4fd61da\/resource\/521bd836-7926-4a75-8388-0971176e3608\/download\/sh-seniors-community-profile-calgary-centre.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">estimated 20,000 people<\/a> are living with dementia in Calgary. KALISTA GROSECLOSE \/ LIVEWIRE CALGARY<\/p>\n<p>Project leaders hope the garden sets an example<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The park is in proximity to Bethany Care Society, a seniors housing centre, and Forest Lawn 55+ Society, a seniors organization with approximately 400 members, all of whom are excited to use the park.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Diane Danielson, a regular at the society, shares that she and everyone in the organization are eager to use the park when it opens in September.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur initial thoughts when we actually learned about it was, \u2018oh, it\u2019s going to be a phenomenal asset to the community,\u2019\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re thankful that somebody thought about it. We know it\u2019s unique in Canada, and we\u2019re very thankful that actually somebody stepped forward as a major sponsor to do it.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ann Craig, another member of the seniors organization and a resident at Bethany Care Society, highlighted how local residents will use the space.
