On May 15, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/psyche-mission-metal-asteroid.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/psyche-mission-metal-asteroid.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/psyche-mission-metal-asteroid.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Psyche<\/a> swooped within 2,864 miles (4,609 kilometers) of the surface, using the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/asteroid-comet-missions\/nasas-psyche-spacecraft-is-flying-to-a-metal-asteroid-so-why-did-it-just-visit-mars\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/asteroid-comet-missions\/nasas-psyche-spacecraft-is-flying-to-a-metal-asteroid-so-why-did-it-just-visit-mars\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/asteroid-comet-missions\/nasas-psyche-spacecraft-is-flying-to-a-metal-asteroid-so-why-did-it-just-visit-mars\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">planet&#8217;s gravity to boost its speed<\/a> and adjust its trajectory toward asteroid Psyche, a metal-rich world in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter that the spacecraft is scheduled to reach in 2029.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/asteroid-comet-missions\/nasas-psyche-spacecraft-is-flying-to-a-metal-asteroid-so-why-did-it-just-visit-mars\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/asteroid-comet-missions\/nasas-psyche-spacecraft-is-flying-to-a-metal-asteroid-so-why-did-it-just-visit-mars\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/asteroid-comet-missions\/nasas-psyche-spacecraft-is-flying-to-a-metal-asteroid-so-why-did-it-just-visit-mars\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">gravity assist<\/a> was years in the making, and the navigation team nailed it \u2014 Psyche flew by Mars on exactly the trajectory we needed to set us on a path to rendezvous with the asteroid in the summer of 2029,&#8221; Bob Mase, Psyche&#8217;s project manager at NASA&#8217;s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California, said in a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/blogs\/psyche\/2026\/07\/17\/nasas-psyche-mission-delivers-mars-flyby-data-time-lapse-video\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/blogs\/psyche\/2026\/07\/17\/nasas-psyche-mission-delivers-mars-flyby-data-time-lapse-video\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:56.25%;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Le6io9mnZfQCh4gCByb9QX.jpg\" alt=\"A crescent that's slightly reddish over a pitch black background.\"   loading=\"lazy\" data-new-v2-image=\"true\" data-original-mos=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Le6io9mnZfQCh4gCByb9QX.jpg\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Le6io9mnZfQCh4gCByb9QX.jpg\" class=\"rounded-[var(--image--border-radius,0)] inline\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p>A screenshot from the timelapse, showing Psyche approaching a crescent Mars. (Image credit: NASA\/JPL-Caltech\/ASU\/True Story Films)<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-cb454092-8549-11f1-bf22-99718e479435\">Approaching from a steep or what scientists call a &#8220;high phase&#8221; angle relative to the sun, Psyche initially caught <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/solar-system\/mars\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/solar-system\/mars\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/solar-system\/mars\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mars<\/a> as a slender crescent with just 4 percent of its disk illuminated and its thin atmosphere glowing in scattered sunlight, Hannah Zigo, a Psyche team member at the Arizona State University, said in a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7Gni54puoIg\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7Gni54puoIg\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">NASA video<\/a> accompanying the statement.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-cb454092-8549-11f1-bf22-99718e479435-1\">As the spacecraft closed in, the video follows Mars steadily expanding to reveal numerous craters puncturing its surface, the ancient double-ringed Huygens crater and the south polar ice cap before receding in the spacecraft&#8217;s rearview.<\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p>The flyby served a dual purpose. By aiming Psyche&#8217;s suite of instruments at a well-studied world, engineers say they calibrated and validated the spacecraft&#8217;s scientific payload ahead of its 2029 destination.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We didn&#8217;t anticipate big discoveries, given how extensively the planet has been studied,&#8221; Lindy Elkins-Tanton, principal investigator for the Psyche mission at the University of California, Berkeley, said in the statement, &#8220;but we did complement Mars science with the data we collected through Psyche&#8217;s unique perspective.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/media\/img\/spc-logo-w.svg\" alt=\"Space\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"w-auto h-7 block w-auto mx-auto mb-4 h-[30px]\" data-component-name=\"Image\"\/><\/p>\n<p>All three of the spacecraft&#8217;s science instruments performed as expected, according to NASA.
