Crude oil inventories in the United States saw an increase of 2.0 million barrels during the week ending July 17, according to new data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) released on Wednesday. The increase brings commercial stockpiles to 411.7 million barrels, according to government data, which are now 6% below the five-year average for this time of year.<\/p>\n

The EIA\u2019s data release follows API\u2019s figures that were released a day earlier, which reported that crude oil inventories had risen by 2.603 million barrels<\/a> in the period.<\/p>\n

Crude futures were trading up in morning trade with a deal between Iran and the US that would restore shipping through the Strait of Hormuz being as elusive as ever. At 9:52 a.m. in New York,\u00a0Brent<\/a>\u00a0futures were trading at $93.34<\/a> per barrel\u2014up $2.33 (+2.56%) on the day and up roughly $9 per barrel from this same time last week. WTI<\/a> was also trading up on the day, by $1.97 per barrel (+2.34%) on Wednesday morning at $86.31.<\/p>\n

For total motor gasoline, the EIA reported that inventories had increased by 800,000 barrels, compared to the week prior\u2019s 1.5 million barrel draw. The most recent figures showed that average daily gasoline production increased to 9.7 million barrels. For middle distillates, inventories increased by 1.4 million barrels with production increasing to an average of 5.3 million barrels daily. Distillate inventories are now 10% below the five-year average.<\/p>\n

Total products supplied\u2014a proxy for U.S. oil demand\u2014averaged 20.4 million barrels per day over the last four weeks, down 1% compared to the same period last year. Gasoline demand averaged 8.9 million barrels per day over the last four weeks, while the distillate four-week average supplied averaged 3.7 million barrels\u2014up 2.2% year over year.<\/p>\n
