The soccer goal nets used at BC Place Stadium during all seven FIFA World Cup matches have been repurposed for whimsical new public installations at popular Metro Vancouver attractions and destinations.

These are the same nets that were part of historic moments for the countries that competed at the stadium, including Canada’s exhilarating 6-0 victory over Qatar, which marked the Canadian men’s first-ever FIFA World Cup win.

The first of the fully functional soccer-net hammocks are now available for the public to enjoy atop Grouse Mountain — joining the summertime installation of the largest Canada flag ever made — as well as at Stanley Park, Kitsilano Beach Pool, and VanDusen Botanical Garden.

Another installation is scheduled to be added next week at the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden in Vancouver’s Chinatown.

Additional hammocks will be provided by the Swiss Football Association and Football Australia, whose national teams both enjoyed memorable and successful stays in Vancouver during the tournament.

The multi-location activation, called “Hammock Goals,” is part of Destination Vancouver’s “Recouver” tourism campaign associated with the tournament.

“The FIFA World Cup was an incredible spectacle, one filled with passion, energy and stressful moments,” said Stefan Hawes, the vice president of global marketing for Destination Vancouver, in a statement.

“But once that final whistle blows, Vancouver offers something just as important: a place to slow down, reconnect with nature and recharge. Whether it’s relaxing in a hammock overlooking the mountains, or unwinding beside the ocean, these are the moments that help visitors leave feeling better than when they arrived. That’s what it means to Recouver in Vancouver.”

The final process for this activation came together over the past two weeks, after Vancouver’s final match.

The removal process for the temporary natural grass field at BC Place Stadium began about two days after the final match on July 7 between Switzerland and Colombia. A new replacement artificial turf will take its place.

The stadium’s first event after the FIFA World Cup will be the BC Lions match against the Toronto Argonauts on July 25. This will be followed by the Vancouver Whitecaps FC match against Los Angeles FC on Aug. 1.
