{"id":819679,"date":"2026-07-22T23:58:11","date_gmt":"2026-07-22T23:58:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/819679\/"},"modified":"2026-07-22T23:58:11","modified_gmt":"2026-07-22T23:58:11","slug":"nasas-new-horizons-spacecraft-is-awake-and-healthy-after-its-one-year-nap-at-the-edge-of-the-solar-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/819679\/","title":{"rendered":"NASA&#8217;s New Horizons spacecraft is awake and healthy after its one-year nap at the edge of the solar system"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"elk-6381ddb6-8617-11f1-8401-bb2a8dab099e\">There&#8217;s nothing more disorienting than falling asleep in transit only to wake up and find you&#8217;ve somehow drifted billions of miles beyond the orbit of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/astronomy\/planets\/pluto\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/astronomy\/planets\/pluto\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/astronomy\/planets\/pluto\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pluto<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately for <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/nasa\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/nasa\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/nasa\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NASA<\/a>&#8216;s New Horizon spacecraft, which scientists just awakened from a nearly yearlong hibernation at the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/solar-system\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/solar-system\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/solar-system\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">solar system<\/a>&#8216;s edge, all systems are in &#8220;good health,&#8221; according to a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/missions\/new-horizons\/nasas-new-horizons-spacecraft-wakes-from-hibernation-in-good-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/missions\/new-horizons\/nasas-new-horizons-spacecraft-wakes-from-hibernation-in-good-health\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">NASA statement<\/a>. On its way to the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/astronomy\/where-does-the-solar-system-end\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/astronomy\/where-does-the-solar-system-end\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/astronomy\/where-does-the-solar-system-end\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">edge of the solar system<\/a>, the spacecraft picked up speed during a flyby of Jupiter in 2007 and then again while passing Pluto in 2015. Today, New Horizons is about 5.9 billion miles (9.5 billion kilometers) from Earth, or roughly <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/pluto.jhuapl.edu\/Mission\/Where-is-New-Horizons.php\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/pluto.jhuapl.edu\/Mission\/Where-is-New-Horizons.php\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">64 times the distance<\/a> from Earth to the sun (64 astronomical units, or AU).<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">With the exception of the twin Voyager probes that launched in 1977, New Horizons is the farthest working spacecraft in the universe. New Horizons whizzed past it in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>(Image credit: NASA\/Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory\/Southwest Research Institute\/Steve Gribben)<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-ae000bb4-8618-11f1-a6e0-edb26cf22fd6\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">Like the Voyager twins, New Horizons is on a trajectory toward the heliopause \u2014 the extreme outer edge of the sun&#8217;s influence, where solar wind collides with the interstellar medium.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">The Voyager probes proved that this dividing line is a measurable, physical boundary in space, marked by <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/voyager-2-detects-heliopause-plasma-shield.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/voyager-2-detects-heliopause-plasma-shield.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/voyager-2-detects-heliopause-plasma-shield.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a hot, thick plasma barrier<\/a>. However, New Horizons will eventually pass this boundary with far more sensitive instruments than the Voyagers held, enabling it to collect the most detailed data about this region ever.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Get the world\u2019s most fascinating discoveries delivered straight to your inbox.<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-ae000ca4-8618-11f1-8caa-8b94c77ee179\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">But there&#8217;s still a long way to go. The heliopause is estimated to begin about 120 AU from the sun \u2014 nearly twice as far as New Horizons has traveled so far. In the meantime, a long and lonely journey through <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/astronomy\/potential-discovery-of-a-dozen-objects-beyond-pluto-could-reveal-a-new-section-of-the-solar-system-we-never-knew-about\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/astronomy\/potential-discovery-of-a-dozen-objects-beyond-pluto-could-reveal-a-new-section-of-the-solar-system-we-never-knew-about\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/astronomy\/potential-discovery-of-a-dozen-objects-beyond-pluto-could-reveal-a-new-section-of-the-solar-system-we-never-knew-about\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Kuiper Belt<\/a> awaits. In the coming weeks, the spacecraft will begin conducting a study of hydrogen in the outer reaches of the heliosphere as it sends back the hoarded trove of data from its year in hibernation.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">According to NASA, each transmission between New Horizons and Earth takes about 8 hours and 52 minutes, with that delay growing all the time.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">In the Kuiper Belt, New Horizons may also have the chance to study peculiar, icy objects similar to the peanut-shaped space rock <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/solar-system\/kuiper-belt\/arrokoth-2014-mu69\/facts\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/solar-system\/kuiper-belt\/arrokoth-2014-mu69\/facts\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Arrokoth<\/a>, which the probe flew by in 2019.
