ROCHESTER, N.Y. \u2014 ESL Ballpark will host a professional boxing event on Aug. 18, months after boxers, referees and many others were left unpaid at the Boxing Extravaganza at the Blue Cross Arena in April.<\/p>\n
RELATED: Boxing event in Rochester leaves promoters more than $100K in debt, fighters still unpaid (May 6)<\/a><\/p>\n About the event at ESL <\/p>\n The events are completely separate, and there should be no concerns over a repeat of what happened a few months back.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019ve worked with Steve, the promoter on shows in the past here, and we\u2019ve had some success together working with him,\u201d said Dan Mason, general manager of the Red Wings. <\/p>\n \u201cWe have enough business community backing us where every fighter during the night who performs will be paid. And that\u2019s what the commission is looking for guarantees on and we have those guarantees,\u201d said Steve Nelson, one of the event promoters. <\/p>\n The boxing event, called \u201cDefying the Odds,\u201d was originally scheduled for Tuesday, July 14. Mason said there were issues solidifying one of the promoter\u2019s opponents, but that\u2019s been resolved.<\/p>\n April\u2019s boxing event <\/p>\n As for April\u2019s event, boxing managers for Bryce Mills and Julio Rosa told News10NBC they still haven\u2019t been paid. Russell Peltz, boxing manager for Mills, said him, Rosa, and the head of the New York State Athletic Commission all testified before a grand jury.<\/p>\n RELATED: \u2018They need to get compensated ASAP\u2019: Boxers, representatives say they haven\u2019t been paid after Boxing Extravaganza (May 8)<\/a><\/p>\n \u201cI know the New York State Athletic Commission is going through the process of liquidating the surety bond. The promoter has to post a bond of $20,000. Hopefully they can liquidate that and pay some of the fighters. Someone\u2019s going to file civil and criminal charges sooner or later, and that\u2019s where we are,\u201d Peltz said.<\/p>\n Peltz said even with liquidating that, organizers would still owe $50,000 to $60,000 just for the actual boxing.<\/p>\n \u201cI don\u2019t know what the feeling is in Rochester about boxing right now after what happened in April. Now, on the other hand, the news about what happened in April, as more people may be thinking about boxing in Rochester, it could work that way to their advantage,\u201d Peltz said.<\/p>\n GoFundMe for fighters <\/p>\n A GoFundMe was set up to help pay for the fighters from the event in April. Boxing\u2019s never been easy, but you have to have everything in place in order to go forward,\u201d Nelson said.<\/p>\n Peltz said Derick Gramling had his promoter license indefinitely suspended.
