Johnny Depp is back atop a major studio tentpole after several years in the wilderness due to the allegations of domestic abuse made by his ex-wife Amber Heard. Now starring in Ebenezer, a retelling of A Christmas Carol<\/a>, Charles Dickens\u2019 timeless tale of an old asshole learning the error of his ways, Depp\u2019s Scrooge and his return to Hollywood are the subtext of the film\u2019s first teaser, which Paramount released in celebration of trotting Depp out at Comic-Con<\/a>. The teaser, which looks like a classical retelling of Dickens\u2019 Carol despite the tagline, \u201cThe name you know, the story you don\u2019t,\u201d places Scrooge in Depp\u2019s pantheon of iconic roles, name-checking Jack Sparrow, Edward Scissorhands, and The Mad Hatter. Now, he\u2019s playing Scrooge in a bid to wash away the lingering bad taste from the abuse allegations Heard made in an op-ed in which she identified as a victim of domestic abuse but did not name Depp specifically. He later sued her for defamation and won<\/a>, as she was embroiled in an online smear campaign. She later appealed and settled out of court.<\/a> Anyway, he\u2019s now playing the archetypal guy who learns to be better, which is a pretty savvy way for a guy who maintains his innocence to seek public redemption.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Despite Depp being fired from Fantastic Beasts: The Forgotten Third Movie<\/a>, Ebenezer sports Harry Potter alum Rupert Grint as Scrooge\u2019s partner Bob Cratchit. It also features Ian McKellen as Jacob Marley, Andrea Riseborough as Ghost of Christmas Past, Tramell Tillman as Ghost of Christmas Present, and Daisy Ridley. Directed by the X trilogy\u2019s Ti West, the movie pitches itself as a Scrooge origin story, but, as mentioned, the trailer only features the story\u2019s most familiar parts.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Ebenezer opens on November 13.<\/p>\n
