{"id":823236,"date":"2026-07-24T14:41:26","date_gmt":"2026-07-24T14:41:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/823236\/"},"modified":"2026-07-24T14:41:26","modified_gmt":"2026-07-24T14:41:26","slug":"tackling-canadian-bridge-worries-the-priority-of-one-ucalgary-professor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/823236\/","title":{"rendered":"Tackling Canadian bridge worries the priority of one UCalgary professor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As bridges across Canada age and deal with increasingly unpredictable weather events, a Calgary-based professor is taking modernization into his own hands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Muntasir Billah, a bridge engineer and associate professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Calgary\u2019s Schulich School of Engineering, said that Canada\u2019s bridges would receive about a C grade for lifespan and safety, among other factors, if he were to grade them today.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have a lot of bridges that are reaching their end of lifespan, so we cannot replace all of them together because of our budget constraint, and also we cannot retrofit all of them at the same time,\u201d he told LWC.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHow we decide which bridges should be retrofitted and what is the best way of retrofitting them, that is a kind of a framework that I\u2019m trying to develop. More precisely, a decision-making framework, so that the bridge owners or engineers can decide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His framework, titled the Resilience Informed Retrofit Design framework (RIFD), has received a five-year, $235,000 <a href=\"https:\/\/nserc-crsng.canada.ca\/en\/funding-opportunity\/discovery-grants-program-individual\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Discovery Grant<\/a> from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The grant is intended to support the development and sustainability of a diverse, high-quality research base in the natural sciences and engineering at Canadian universities, to foster research excellence, and to strengthen the research training environment, according to the Government of Canada.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When looking at bridges specifically, resilience is determined by their ability to resume use after a major event such as an earthquake, a flood, or a vehicle collision.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf we think about our city of Calgary, there are hundreds of bridges, and if one bridge is closed, then we see how much it affects our everyday commute, how much it affects our supply chain,\u201d Billah said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe want to develop a framework so that we can strengthen our existing bridges so that we don\u2019t have an unwanted bridge closure or detour for our commuters or any disruption to our supply chain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The framework will integrate operational, social, and economic aspects, Billah said, all to give individualized decisions on bridge futures as much context as possible.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"696\" height=\"519\" data-attachment-id=\"243855\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/livewirecalgary.com\/2026\/07\/24\/tackling-canadian-bridge-worries-the-priority-of-one-ucalgary-professor\/dr-muntasir-billah-utoday-story\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/livewirecalgary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Dr.-Muntasir-Billah-UToday-Story-e1784828874675.webp?fit=1140%2C850&amp;ssl=1\" data-orig-size=\"1140,850\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;alt&quot;:&quot;&quot;}\" data-image-title=\"Dr. Muntasir Billah UToday Story\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"&lt;p&gt;Dr. Muntasir Billah. PHOTO BY TANVIR TUSHER<\/p>\n<p>Five-year grant, long-term project<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Day-to-day, Billah looks not only at bridges but also at overall infrastructure systems, climate change, and how other hazards affect existing infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe do a lot of experimental work. Whenever we come up with an idea, we do experiments in our structural engineering laboratory \u2014 we test some of the bridge components, then we develop finite element models based on our experimental studies in computer simulation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThen we analyze them, varying different parameters and try to see what is the best combination that can help us reduce the impact of these all different natural hazards.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each project has competing factors like cost, long-term performance, and safety, which are taken into careful account, Billah said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhenever we are taking a set of bridges and then the cost of retrofitting, the priority to the community and a few other factors, that\u2019s why we are calling it a multi-criteria decision analysis framework,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs we do experiments, we\u2019ll see which criteria are most important and also we\u2019ll be engaging in discussion with different industry partners.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the lifespan of the grant, success will be multifaceted, according to Billah.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is a long process to be included in the code because before it goes in, there of course needs to be a lot of validation, and five years is not enough,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs we move forward, as long as we can develop this framework, get validated by industry professionals, that is what success would look like to us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Billah said that helping taxpayers\u2019 pockets by reducing the needed cash to retrofit existing bridges would be another big plus.<\/p>\n<p>Liked it?
