Smoke has settled into the Nicola Valley and the heat is not letting up, but the City of Merritt
says there is currently no wildfire threat to the community.<\/p>\n

Adam Hart, emergency management coordinator for the City of Merritt, said the city remains in
daily contact with the BC Wildfire Service, RCMP, Interior Health and other agencies to stay
informed as conditions change.<\/p>\n

The city also has an Emergency Operations Centre ready to open if it is ever needed.
While there is no current threat to Merritt, residents can use several city resources to stay
informed about the heat, smoke and any emergencies that may arise.<\/p>\n

Voyent Alert is used by the city to send evacuation alerts, evacuation orders and other
emergency notifications. Alerts can be received through the app, text message, email, cellphone
or landline, but residents must register to receive them.<\/p>\n

People can also create an Emergency Support Services profile ahead of time. ESS provides basic
support during an evacuation, including food, clothing and somewhere to stay. Registering
beforehand can make the process easier if that help is ever needed.<\/p>\n

The BC Pet Registry allows owners to register their animals, while microchips and tattoos can
help reunite lost pets with their owners if they ever become separated.<\/p>\n

With the current heat, the city\u2019s Merritt Cool Places map can help people find somewhere nearby
to take a break. Locations are marked with snowflake symbols, and each listing explains what is
available.<\/p>\n

Depending on the location, that may include air conditioning, bottled water, seating or space for
pets. The sites are not intended for all-day stays, but they offer somewhere to cool down, have
some water and catch your breath.<\/p>\n

The city\u2019s heat information page also includes a link to BC Hydro\u2019s free portable air conditioner
program for qualifying customers.<\/p>\n

Smoke can be more difficult to track because it may travel a long way and settle into the valley,
even when the fire producing it is nowhere near Merritt.<\/p>\n

Residents can check current air-quality conditions and warnings through the Nicola Air Quality
Region and sign up to receive air-quality alerts.<\/p>\n

During heavy smoke, people can reduce their exposure by keeping doors and windows closed,
limiting time outside and using an air purifier if one is available. A properly fitted N95 mask can
also help filter fine smoke particles while outdoors.<\/p>\n

There is no current wildfire threat to Merritt, but smoke, heat and changing summer conditions
can still take a toll.<\/p>\n

Preparedness matters, but so does community. Share reliable information, pay attention to the
people around you and lend a hand when one is needed. Sometimes looking after a community
begins with simply looking after one another.<\/p>\n
