A pair of hikers have been charged following the circulation of a viral video across various social media networks, featuring their encounter with a grizzly bear while hiking with an off-leash dog on the Taylor Lake trail in Banff National Park.

Following an investigation, Parks Canada wardens identified the individuals and laid charges under the National Parks of Canada Domestic Animal Regulations for failing to keep their dog on a leash.

Parks Canada believes the bear in the video was female grizzly No. 142, a well-known local breeding bear that lost one of her cubs to a train accident earlier this year. Despite the close encounter, the bear did not display any aggressive behaviour toward the hiker or the dog.

In the video, one hiker is seen holding bear spray while the other films and calls for their dog named Lola to return as the bear continues walks calmly along the trail.

Officials say off-leash dogs can endanger both people and wildlife.

“Failing to keep your pets leashed in the national parks poses risks to pets and wildlife,” James Eastham, a Parks Canada spokesperson, told Rocky Mountain Outlook, via email.

“Bears and other wildlife may react aggressively toward dogs they view as threats, resulting in their injury or death. Off-leash dogs can also cause wildlife stress, leading to them avoiding important habitat and sources of food.”

It is illegal to feed, entice, or disturb any wildlife in a Canadian national park. Violators could face charges, court appearances, and fines up to $25,000.
