And so enters another variable in the future of B.C. Place<\/a>: could the BC Lions, not the Vancouver Whitecaps<\/a>, purchase the downtown Vancouver stadium?<\/p>\n

TSN\u2019s Farhan Lalji reported Friday afternoon<\/a> that Amar Doman, owner of the Lions, had submitted a letter of interest to the provincial government regarding the purchase of the 43-year-old stadium.<\/p>\n

A source confirmed to Postmedia that buying B.C. Place<\/a> has been on Doman\u2019s radar for a long time.<\/p>\n

Doman\u2019s now-stated interest comes a day after jobs minister Ravi Kahlon told Postmedia<\/a> the province would consider selling the stadium to the Whitecaps if the terms were right. That would, of course, be a very expensive proposition given the debt the stadium carries from extensive renovations<\/a> over the past decade, not to mention the value of the land the stadium sits on.<\/p>\n

The Whitecaps have expressed interest in building their own stadium in the long term but would presumably also be interested in purchasing B.C. Place if they could secure the financing.<\/p>\n

To date, most reporting has focused on the possibility the team might take on a management contract for the stadium, something sources confirmed was finally discussed between the team and the province two weeks ago. No formal proposal has yet been tabled.<\/p>\n
