\u201cS\u00e3o Paulo is a place that we love and hate,\u201d says Simone Arruda of her Brazilian home city. \u201cAnd anyone who knows it knows that when it rains, everything turns\u00a0to chaos.\u201d<\/p>\n
Arruda took this shot at rush hour on a soggy March evening. She was heading home via Br\u00e1s station, \u201ca massive hub in a neighbourhood that is always extremely busy due to its intense commerce\u201d, she says.<\/p>\n
Packed between tired, wet commuters, she observed those who had already secured a ride home through the train window. While the colours and contrast drew her eye, it was the human scene that made her lift her phone.<\/p>\n
\u201cI love capturing people reading, because it represents a moment of introspection, a bit of peace amid all the hustle and bustle,\u201d she says. \u201cAlso, the upwards glance of the woman on the right guides my eyes straight to the red light, signifying that the doors are closing. It\u2019s as if she\u2019s thinking, \u2018Finally, this train is going to move,\u2019 so there\u2019s an element of\u00a0solace here, too.\u201d<\/p>\n
Arruda stayed true to\u00a0the atmosphere of the\u00a0scene when applying minor saturation and sharpness adjustments. \u201cI always avoid exaggeration,\u201d she says. \u201cI never want to make things look artificial or alter their true essence. While the rain brings chaos, it also makes everything so cinematic.
